Case and connectivity - Asus laptop with Thunderbolt 4
The roughened surfaces of the matte black case (made of a magnesium-aluminum alloy) don't seem to be particularly susceptible to fingerprints. The coating contains tiny sparkling elements that twinkle when the light hits them - this explains the name of the color: Star Black. The laptop does not have any manufacturing flaws: The gap dimensions are accurate, and there are no material protrusions. The stability and stiffness of the chassis are right on target. There is no maintenance hatch. The battery is firmly built into the device.
The convertible has two USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4). The latter serve a variety of purposes: Providing power to the laptop (Power Delivery), expanding interfaces via a docking station, connecting an external GPU, and video output (DisplayPort via USB-C). Together with the HDMI output and the separate Mini DisplayPort, the B7 has four video outputs. The Micro HDMI port doubles as an Ethernet port (using the included adapter). The B7 does not have a memory card reader.
The WLAN chip (Intel AX201) supports the 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax standards. The transfer rates determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices nearby, short distance between laptop and server PC) are excellent. Wireless connections can also be established over the 5G or LTE networks. Asus has equipped the B7 with a 5G modem (Intel 5G Solution 5000).
Input devices - The ExpertBook Flip comes with a backlit keyboard
The flat, smooth keys of the backlit chiclet keyboard have a short travel and a clear pressure point. The resistance provided by the keys is pleasing. The keyboard doesn't yield during typing. The single-level key illumination is controlled via a function key. All in all, Asus delivers a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use here.
The smooth surface of the multitouch-capable ClickPad (about 13 x 6.6 cm) makes it easy for the fingers to glide on it. The pad also responds to inputs in the corners. It has a short travel and a clear pressure point. Tapping the upper right corner of the pad results in a number block being displayed on the surface.
The touchscreen supports 10 touch points and responds quickly to inputs. The screen can be operated through touch input as well as with the included Asus stylus (SA201H). The stylus attaches magnetically to the right side of the lid.
Display - A bright 16:10 panel for the Asus laptop
Asus has equipped the ExpertBook with a glossy 14-inch touchscreen display (1920x1080) in an aspect ratio of 16:10. The brightness (515 cd/m²) and contrast (3,224:1) are very good. The display's anti-glare coating reduces reflections, but they are still present. Positive: No PWM flickering could be detected.
The display is equipped with a privacy shield (Asus Private View) that can be switched on and off. This is intended to prevent/difficult the lateral view of the display. The privacy function can be enabled or disabled via a key combination ("Fn" + "2").

Performance - Tiger Lake powers the Asus Flip
With the ExpertBook B7 Flip, Asus delivers a business-segment 2-in-1 device that offers more than enough computing power for office and Internet applications.
Test conditions
The laptop has three manufacturer-specific performance profiles ("Performance Mode", "Balanced Mode", "Quiet Mode"), which can be switched between using the key combination "Fn" + "F". The benchmarks were performed with the "Balanced Mode" profile active. Some benchmarks were additionally run under the other profiles. The results are found in the comparison graphs.
Processor
The Core i7-1195G7 quad-core processor (Tiger Lake) runs at a base clock speed of 2.9 GHz. An increase to 4.2 GHz (four cores) or 5 GHz (one core) is possible via Turbo. Hyper-Threading (two threads per core) is supported. The multithread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark is executed at 3.7 to 3.9 GHz, and the single-thread test at 2 to 5 GHz. The clock rates are significantly lower on battery power.
We verify whether the CPU Turbo is used consistently when plugged in by running the Cinebench R15 benchmark's multithread test in a loop for a minimum of 30 minutes. Turbo is only used to a low extent. Three of the four CPU cores operate at an average speed that is just below the base clock speed. The "Performance Mode" energy profile provides an increase in clock rates.

System performance
The fast and smooth system didn't cause any problems. The CPU provides enough performance for office and Internet applications. This is complemented by good PCMark results. However, Asus lets some of the performance go to waste since is RAM is only running in single-channel mode. Dual-channel mode can be enabled by installing a second memory module.

Graphics card
The built-in Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 96EU GPU is unable to maintain its maximum clock speed of 1,400 MHz over the long-term - but it's close: The GPU performs our The Witcher 3 test at 1,350 to 1,400 MHz. The B7 is not a gaming laptop. Nevertheless, the built-in hardware can render some games smoothly - at low resolutions and low quality settings.
The GPU remains clearly below its potential in every test. The reason: The RAM only runs in single-channel mode. Enabling dual-channel mode (= installing a second memory module) would increase both the benchmark results as well as the frame rates in games (see comparison tables).

Noise emissions
In everyday use (office, Internet), the fan is often idle and silence prevails. Under load, the sound pressure level rises up to 46.7 dB(A) - an excessive value. The competition scores better here. The use of the "Quiet Mode" profile lowers noise development - at the expense of processing power.

Temperature
The convertible doesn't heat up excessively. Temperatures beyond 40 °C (~104 °F) were registered at two measuring points during the stress test. In everyday use (office, Internet), the rates remain in the green zone.
At the beginning of the stress test (Prime95 and FurMark run for at least an hour), the CPU and GPU run at 3.9 GHz and 1,050 MHz, respectively, for a few seconds. The clock rates drop quite quickly and settle at around 800 to 1,400 MHz and 750 MHz, respectively. The stress test represents an extreme scenario. We use this test to check whether the system remains stable under full load.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38.7 °C / 102 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 45.3 °C / 114 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.3 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27.6 °C / 81.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.1 °C / 82.6 F (+0.5 °C / 0.9 F).

Energy consumption
There are no problems in terms of energy consumption. Power consumption is normal for the hardware installed here. The maximum of just under 65 watts is reached at the beginning of the stress test. The value decreases over the course of the test. The laptop performs our The Witcher 3 test with a constant power consumption. Verdict - A 2-in-1 laptop for professional use
A weight of approximately 1.4 kg and real-world battery runtimes of just under 12 hours make the 2-in-1 device a great mobile companion. Good: The device can be powered through both USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4). Networks can be accessed via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and 5G/LTE.
Asus delivers a well-rounded 2-in-1 laptop for the premium business segment with the ExpertBook B7 Flip.
A Core i7-1195G7 processor, 16 GB of RAM (single-channel mode, expandable), and a 1 TB NVMe SSD equip the laptop for all the common application scenarios of a convertible. The Core i7 responds to short load peaks with a lot of processing power; it needs to slow down a bit during extended load. The laptop hardly heats up under load, but it produces a relatively high level of noise. The performance profile "Quiet Mode" offers relief here. The reduced computing power that results from this is still sufficient for office and Internet use.
The touchscreen display (1920x1200 pixels) scores points with an outstanding contrast, high brightness, stable viewing angles, very solid color reproduction, and good color-space coverage. The touchscreen can be operated through touch input as well as with the included Asus stylus (Asus Pen SA201H).
The Dell Latitude 9420 2-in-1 and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6 can be considered as equivalent alternatives to the ExpertBook. The weakness of both devices: Their RAM is soldered and can't be expanded.
