Prime Computer is a system manufacturer headquartered in Switzerland that makes the sustainability of its products its primary goal. According to its own statements, device production and the first five years of operation are 100% climate neutral. Moreover, the PrimeBook Circular is modularly designed, making it very easy to adapt the system to needs of users, which is also intended to extend the product life cycle. Those wanting to know more can visit the company's homepage for more information.
The PrimeBook Circular is a business notebook in a 14-inch format. Our review configuration is based on Intel's NUC Compute Element CM11EBI716W and offers an Intel Core i7-1165G7 with 16 GB of RAM and Wi-Fi 6. Further equipment includes a high-resolution 13.9-inch touch display and a fast 500 GB SSD. Readers should keep in mind that the SSD and the Compute Element are configurable components and can vary. Prime Computer charges EUR 1,668 (before taxes) for our configuration. The cheapest configuration with an Intel Celeron 6305 and 4 GB RAM is currently listed at EUR 1,055 while the fastest Intel model (Core i7-1185G7) is priced at EUR 1,753. Again, both prices do not include VAT. You should also know that the Compute Element is a kind of plug-in card that can be easily swapped out and contains all essential components (CPU, RAM etc.). All details about the installed Compute Element can be found here.
Compute Elements based on Alder Lake chips are expected to follow at a later date, with the manufacturer stating Q4 2022 as the intended timeframe. By then, there should also be variants with up to 32 GB RAM in the i7 model. The i5 model should then offer up to 16 GB of RAM.
Rival devices of the PrimeBook Circular include current office notebooks in a 14-inch format with similar equipment.

Case
The case of the PrimeBook Circular is made entirely out of anodized aluminum and is thus very strong. This also applies to the display lid, which can only be twisted very slightly. Regarding color, the manufacturer specifies the PrimeBook Circular as dark gray, which is also accurate. There are no optical highlights, which is a good thing, since the device is primarily oriented towards business and productive work use. Opening the display is possible up to 180 degrees and the screen is held well in place by the hinges. One-handed opening is also possible.
Size Comparison
The PrimeBook Circular takes up a total of 30.4 x 23.0 cm, making it roughly the same size as our comparison devices. Our review sample is relatively thin at only 16 mm. Only the Dell Inspiron 14 is considerably thicker in comparison. The sturdy and solid case of the PrimeBook Circular is responsible for the relatively high weight of 1.6 kilograms, while the power adapter weighs 330 grams.
Equipment
The choice of connectivity includes the most important interfaces. Two USB Type-A ports are available and are appropriately located on both sides of the device. The Type-C port primarily serves as the power connection, but it also supports Thunderbolt 4, which strongly reinforces the PrimeBook Circular's purpose. Such a versatile interface could thus also be used to connect an external graphics card. Monitors can be connected via HDMI or Mini DisplayPort. The only point of criticism is the lack of a card reader.
Communication
The Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 module installed in the Compute Element delivers very good performance in tandem with our reference router (ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000). Compared to the wired network connection, the Wi-Fi module even has a clear speed advantage. Unfortunately, the RJ45 interface only achieves a maximum of 1 GBit/s.
Webcam
The 720p webcam is only conditionally suitable for everyday use, as the resolution is not particularly high at 0.9 MPix. The only remedy here is to use an external solution. As an important security aspect, the webcam also offers a mechanical shutter.
Security
Security features consist of a fingerprint scanner and an infrared camera, which also supports "Windows Hello". Both login options can be quickly set up and make the authentication process easier. A Kensington lock is also available to guard against opportune theft.
Accessories
In addition to the notebook, only the matching 65-watt power adapter is included in the scope of delivery. The laptop is delivered in environmentally friendly packaging without plastic, once again reinforcing the manufacturer's commitment to sustainability.
Maintenance
Maintenance work on the PrimeBook Circular is limited to the essentials. There is no maintenance hatch, so those wanting to access the interior have to remove the baseplate. But this can be done quickly with a little skill and the right tools. The SoC, RAM and Wi-Fi module are located in the Intel NUC Compute Element, which can be replaced. This means that fututre upgrades are possible. The mass storage is also easily accessible and replaceable.
Warranty
Prime Computer grants customers a 36-month warranty when purchasing the PrimeBook Circular, which is valid worldwide and can be optionally extended to 5 years. The surcharge for this is EUR 139 (US$ 140) plus VAT.
Input Devices
Keyboard
The 6-line chiclet keyboard of the PrimeBook Circular offers a firm typing feel. The pressure point is clearly noticeable and the travel is not muffled. The keys are sufficiently large at 15 x 15 millimeters, although the "up" and "down" arrow keys are only at half the height for optical reasons. In poor lighting conditions, you can fall back on the two-level backlighting. This can also be switched off.
Touchpad
The clickpad measures 10.2 x 5.1 centimeters and uses the allocated space very well. The input surface is not at the same height as the palm rest, but this is not an issue because it actually makes orientation very easy. Like many business devices from Lenovo, Dell or HP, there is also a trackpoint. This works very well and those who are used to it can navigate very quickly without having to take their hands off the keyboard. This also includes the three additional keys above the touchpad.
Display
The inbuilt display is an IPS touch display in 3:2 format with a resolution of 3,000 x 2,000. The promised 400 cd/m² was achieved under testing and exceeded in some cases. Nevertheless, our review sample only achieves an illumination of 85 percent, which is not quite homogeneous. In practice, on the other hand, no disadvantages were observed. The black value of 0.27 is more in the midfield. But in combination with good brightness, this still suffices for a good contrast ratio. No PWM flickering was detected.
Prime Computer does not currently offer an alternative display option. A 120 or 144 Hz option would be desirable in matters of longevity and long-term use.

* ... smaller is better
Even in the state of delivery, the measured Delta E-2000 color deviations compared to the sRGB color space are very low and in some cases below the target value of 3. The Asus ZenBook 14x and the Acer Travelmate P614P also achieve similarly good results here. After manual calibration, we were able to improve the measurement results significantly in some cases, as you can see in the pictures. The corresponding ICC profile can be found above the comparison table. In terms of color space coverage, however, our review sample did not quite meet expectations. According to the technical data, the sRGB color space should have 100 percent coverage. We measured 95.6 percent, so the deviation is fortunately within limits. For the AdobeRGB and P3 color space, this was around 65%. This makes the panel rather unsuitable for professional photo or video editing.

The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 42 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (33.7 ms). |

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17924 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
In the viewing angle test, we observed a result that is typical for IPS panels: the display is very stable at all viewing angles and color changes can only been seen to a small extent. The good display brightness comes in handy outdoors. However, you should preferably find a shady spot due to the strong reflections, which makes working on the laptop exhausting over longer periods of time.
Performance
The Intel NUC Compute Element CM11EBI716W, which houses an Intel Core i7-1165G7 with 16 GB of RAM, makes the PrimeBook Circular very well equipped as an office notebook and suitable for demanding tasks that go beyond normal everyday business use.
Testing Conditions
All performance tests were run under Windows' high-performance mode in order to achieve the best possible performance. We recommend using the "Balanced" energy option for everyday use. We also used this option for the practical WLAN battery test.
Processor
The Intel Core i7-1165G7 powers the PrimeBook Circular and, unlike conventional laptops, is not permanently installed in the device. The SoC is still soldered, but on the Intel NUC Compute Element CM11EBI716W, which you can see on the right in the picture. The module can be easily removed and replaced with another one. This allows the laptop to be upgraded even on the CPU side, which is usually not possible with compact notebooks.
The SoC offers a total of 4 cores with 8 threads at a base clock speed of 2.8 GHz. Up to 4.7 GHz is also possible in turbo. However, the performance of the Intel Core i7-1165G7 does not quite reach the level of the comparison devices based on the same SoC under testing. The reasons for this lies in the PL values. The SoC in our review device has to make do with a maximum of 45 watts, while up to 64 watts is possible in the Acer TravelMate P614P. With this in mind, the gap of only 8% is still quite acceptable and not really noticeable in everyday use.
In the Cinebench R15 multi-loop, the Intel Core i7-1165G7 starts at just under 930 points and levels off at an average of 808 points as the test draws out, i.e. loses around 10% performance under permanent load.

DPC Latency
There is room for improvement here, as the DPC latencies are simply too high and can thus cause dropouts during audio or video work in real time.

Storage Devices
Prime Computer makes use of a SDD from Samsung, which is a very good choice in our opinion because the transfer rates are fast and consistent. Particularly noteworthy is the decent 4K read value, which speeds up the loading of many small files. Unfortunately only one mass storage device can be accommodated in the PrimeBook Circular. According to the manufacturer, sizes of up to 1 TB are supported.

Graphics Card
As the integrated GPU of the Intel Core i7-1165G7, the Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 is now a widely used graphics chip and is comparable to an AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 in terms of performance. Thanks to the fast RAM (4,266 MHz), which also works in dual-channel mode, the theoretical optimum is squeezed out of the iGPU in the PrimeBook Circular. The Acer TravelMate P614P shows what is possible with an even higher power allowance. For more comparisons and benchmarks, please see our GPU comparison chart.

Gaming Performance
The PrimeBook Circular is not a gaming laptop, which is also reflected in the performance of the Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7. The iGPU is only suitable for running simple or older games. In addition, limitations on details or resolution often have to be accepted in order to achieve playable frame rates.

Temperature
Prime Computer has the case temperatures of the PrimeBook Circular well under control. Surface temperatures are only slightly higher in the area of the Intel NUC Compute Element. Our review sample outshines the competition in terms of upper side heat, generating a maximum of 41.1 °C. Only the Acer Travelmate P614P produces a near-identical result.
At 94 °C, the SoC heats up quite a bit under load and we had to intervene to avoid overheating (see also the performance drop in CPU the test). This could be due to the very conservative fan curve, but the built-in heat pipe could also be the reason here. Unlike in other notebooks that do not have an Intel NUC Compute Element installed, the heat pipe does not lie directly on the CPU in this case, but rather dissipates the heat from the surface of the Compute Element.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41.1 °C / 106 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 38.1 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 31.3 °C / 88 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 31.8 °C / 89.2 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.7 °C / 81.9 F (-4.1 °C / -7.3 F).

Speakers
The two speakers are located under the palm rests and generate the best sound when the notebook is placed on a firm and smooth surface. However, the sound is dominated by the highs and mids. Basses are nevertheless reproduced to some extent and not completely omitted. The PrimeBook Circular is very well suited for office use, which includes video telephony. For real audio enjoyment, however, there is no way around an external solution. Accessories can be connected to the device via USB or the 3.5 mm jack. Alternatively, the Bluetooth option can be used with compatible end devices.

Energy Management
Power Consumption
Using only 3.3 to 8.4 watts, the device is very economical when idle. Under average load, the 65-watt power supply unit has to consistently deliver up to 43.6 watts, and there are also peaks of up to 62 watts. Compared to the competition, the PrimeBook Circular performs quite well. Similarly equipped devices from Dell (Inspiron 14 5410) and Acer (TravelMate P614P-52) require up to 25 percent more energy. These are only short-lived and usually occur when the full load of the SoC is needed for a short time. This means that the power supply is not overloaded and the battery does not discharge when the power supply is plugged in.

Battery Life
The inbuilt battery offers the highest capacity compared to other competing 14-inch laptops. 77 Wh proved sufficient for supplying the device with energy for almost 14 hours in our practical WLAN test. The display brightness was reduced to 38 percent to achieve the uniform measured value of 150 cd/m². With a runtime of 10 hours, our review sample also achieves a very good value when playing the H264 test video. Some of the competition is clearly surpassed in terms of battery life. Only the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G2 can compete here.

Verdict: Modern business notebook with upgrade options
The PrimeBook Circular is first and foremost a conventional business notebook. The sustainability aspect only becomes apparent upon closer inspection. The manufacturer, Prime Computer, promises 100% climate neutrality for manufacturing, distribution and the first five years of use.
In terms of performance, we can say that the PrimeBook Circular (assuming that the configuration is the same as in our review sample) has the potential to be a long-lasting companion. The Intel NUC Compute Element currently offers a powerful Intel Core i7-1165G7 which, however, was unable to utilize its maximum potential. Nevertheless, fast operation is always assured. The possibility of upgrading the system with a newer Intel NUC Compute Element at a later point in time and thus upping the performance is a very attractive prospect indeed. The rest of the hardware is also up to date and even Thunderbolt 4 is included. The high-resolution touch display gives good results under testing, but is not ideal for mobile use outdoors due to its glossy display surface.
Thanks to its modular design, the PrimeBook Circular has the potential to be a long-term companion.
We very much liked the PrimeBook Circular's emission rates. In short, the low energy requirements when idling and under low load allow for very long battery runtimes. A complete workday without interruptions should be possible.
Shortcomings include the lack of a card reader, as well as the fixed RAM of the Compute Element. If you are aware of these drawbacks and can live with them, you'll get a modern, notebook that is fit for the future in the Primebook Circular.
Price and Availability
The current price for the PrimeBook Circular is EUR 1,980 (around US$ 2000). The Swiss manufacturer appears to only offer the model in certain countries in Europe (namely Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the UK, Ireland and Kosovo) via certain distributors. An overview of this can be accessed here (scroll down and click on All resellers, all countries). There are also distributors on the Arabian Peninsula (Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia).
