Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G2 AMD Laptop Review: Ultrabook Efficiency Meets Workstation Power
The ThinkPad T14s G2 is successor to the popular T14s and is only second in popularity to Lenovo’s own T-series ThinkPad without the “s” suffix. We had the Intel SKU in review recently, and now it is time to take a closer look at the AMD model. Our review unit, model number 20XGS01100 is made for the European educational market and very well equipped. For slightly under 1,500 Euros you get an AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U 8-core CPU, 32 GB of soldered LPDDR4X RAM, a Vega 8 iGPU, a 1 TB large NVMe SSD, and a 400 nits FHD IPS low-power display.

Its main competitors are the HP EliteBook 845, Dell’s Latitude 14 5420, the Intel-equipped T14s G2, the X1 Carbon G9, and last but not least its immediate AMD-equipped predecessor. Another potential rival is Lenovo’s own ThinkPad X13 Gen2 (AMD).

Connectivity: ThinkPad T14s G2 AMD with Good Connectivity
Communication
Our review unit came equipped with a Realtek Wi-Fi modem that performed significantly worse than its predecessor’s Intel AX200. In fact it performed so poorly that it did not manage to break last place. Keep in mind, however, that some SKUs come with Intel, Qualcomm, or MediaTek Wi-Fi modems instead.
Display – 4K Option Finally Available
Among the six display options we finally find a 4K display for Lenovo’s AMD-powered 14-inch ThinkPad. Our review unit came with the 400 nits FHD low-power display, the very panel same that we also found in our T14s G2 Intel SKU. More information can be found in that review.

Keep in mind that the low-power display is manufactured by a total of three different OEMs, and that overall quality can vary immensely. For example, our review unit’s panel was by far the worst of the three. This display lottery is not new for Lenovo. In addition, low-power displays tend to suffer from ghosting. We found some backlight bleeding, but it was nowhere near bright enough to be noticeable in everyday use. AMD Freesync is supported at frequencies between 48 and 60 Hz to prevent screen tearing.

At 1408:1 the display's contrast ratio was decent. However, at just 92 % sRGB its color-space coverage leaves some room for improvement. Overall response times are slow, which is not particularly problematic for office use.

The display backlight flickers at 2451 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 50 cd/m² and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 2451 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. As the flickering occurs only on very low brightness settings, it should not be an issue in typical office settings. Nonetheless, use in low light conditions may be straining to the eyes. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17356 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The ThinkPad T14s turned out to be very usable outdoors thanks to its matte display and its display brightness of up to 400 nits. However, it was nowhere near bright enough to remain usable in bright and direct sunlight.
As is common for IPS panels its viewing angles are around 170°, and the optional 4K display offers up to 178°. Only an OLED display would be able to offer even more.
Performance – ThinkPad T14s with Efficient 8-Core CPU
Various CPU options are available for the ThinkPad T14s, ranging from quad to octa-cores and paired with either a Vega 7 or Vega 8 iGPU powerful enough for office applications, multiple simultaneous high-resolution video streams, and even occasional gaming.
Unfortunately, like on the previous two generations RAM is soldered onto the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. A total of 32 GB LPDDR4X-4267 (around 7 % faster than DDR4-3200) should be enough for most users though. Unlike the Intel SKU, which supports quad-channel RAM, the AMD model’s RAM is dual-channel-only (see the AIDA64 Memory Benchmark results below for more details). Unlike the RAM the M.2-2280 SSD can be replaced and upgraded.
Processor
AMD’s Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U runs between 1.9 and 4.4 GHz and features eight cores with a total of 16 threads. For about one second it runs at 8x 3 GHz and consumes 30 W of power, and even though the ThinkPad’s cooler would have been capable of maintaining that high level of boost for much longer Lenovo’s fan curves are very conservative in favor of lower noise emissions. Consequently, after that initial second the CPU powered down to a still more than adequate 8x 2.7 GHz. Compare that to the Intel SKU which is allowed to consume 40 W with a short 55 W peak. Nevertheless, the Core i7-1165G7 cannot hold a candle to AMD’s octa-core Ryzen 7 Pro with the latter offering a whopping 50 % more performance in multi-core loads at a much more efficient 22 W (predecessor: 18 W). And to add insult to injure the Intel SKU thermal throttles after 30 minutes resulting in a twice as fast AMD SKU.
With its new CPUs AMD is once more the king of single-core performance as well and beats the Intel competitor by a very narrow margin of just one percent. Compared to last year’s Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U that can also be found in HP’s EliteBook 845 G7 this constitutes a 25 % improvement. We found no hints of throttling on battery on the AMD unit while the Intel SKU had to throttle by around 16 %. You can find more CPU benchmarks in our technology section.

System Performance
In PCMark 10 the AMD SKU manages to once again outperform all of its competitors. In around 90 % of all benchmarks, including the ones already mentioned above, the Ryzen 7 octa-core CPU ran faster than all of its rivals. This translates to excellent real-world performance regardless of application.

Storage Devices
The installed 1 TB UMIS AM630 SSD may be designed for PCIe Gen 4 bus connectivity, unfortunately it is only connected to a PCIe 3 x4 bus and thus noticeably slower than most of our SSDs. Thanks to its PCIe 4.0 bus the X1 Carbon Gen 9 is the unchallenged king of the hill. Nevertheless, we found our review unit’s overall system performance to be more than adequate.
A secondary M.2-2242 SSD can be installed in the T14s G2’s WWAN slot. Keep in mind that this slot does neither support SATA SSDs nor booting from.
