Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 review: AMD Ryzen Pro makes the compact business laptop fast
The name "ThinkPad X13 Gen 2" refers to two models. Lenovo's smallest enterprise ThinkPad, besides the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano, is available both with Intel and AMD processors. We already reviewed this year's big 16:10 update when the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 Intel made its way through our test labs in July - now it's the AMD model's turn. As usual in this case, we won't go through the details regarding design, connectivity, and input devices again, but we'll jump right into the display section instead. You can find information on the other topics in the review of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 Intel.

Display: 16:10 featured for the first time in a Ryzen ThinkPad
With this year's 16:10 redesign of the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2, Lenovo refreshed the range of available display options. The HD resolution (1366x768) has finally been dropped from the lineup. In addition, all of the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2's displays are now IPS-based:
- 1920x1200 (WUXGA), 300 cd/m², matte, 72% NTSC
- 1920x1200 (WUXGA), 300 cd/m², matte, 72% NTSC, On-Cell Touch
- 1920x1200 (WUXGA), 500 cd/m², matte, 72% NTSC ePrivacy Filter
- 2560x1600 (WQXGA), 400 cd/m², matte, 72% NTSC, Low Power
We were already able to test the base panel installed in our unit, which has a WUXGA resolution and is made by BOE, in the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 Intel. The measurements are very similar, although the model under review here is slightly dimmer and just misses the specified brightness value of 300 cd/m² with an average of 297 cd/m². In comparison with the competition, both the lightweight Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano as well as the Dell XPS 13 9310 offer more brightness.

* ... smaller is better
Out of the box, the color profile of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD can be described as slightly too warm - as usual, the display measurements were taken with the CalMan software and the X-Rite i1Pro 2 colorimeter. We were able to correct this effect by performing a calibration with the X-Rite i1Profiler, which resulted in an average DeltaE 2000 for color values of a good 0.8 after calibration.
The display's image reproduction is acceptable, although not great - a slightly higher contrast value than the measured 1,188:1 would benefit the monitor. On the other hand, the sRGB color-space coverage can hardly be improved, since the small color space is almost fully covered with a rate of 99.4%. Therefore, you can expect reasonably accurate colors for web surfing or simple image editing after calibration.
Brightness is sufficient to allow the content on the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD's matte display to be readable outdoors in daylight. Particularly for a subnotebook, though, users might find themselves wishing for a slightly higher brightness in the future.

Performance: AMD Ryzen Pro provides performance boost for the Lenovo laptop
There are three Pro and one non-Pro Ryzen CPUs available in the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD: The AMD Ryzen 3 Pro 5450U, the Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U, the Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U, as well as the AMD Ryzen 5 5600U. There are no dedicated GPUs, which means that the integrated AMD Radeon solution will have to do.
RAM has been soldered in the ThinkPad X series since 2018 - at least there's now up to 32 GB, and the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 now features faster LPDDR4X-4266 memory instead of DDR4-3200. An M.2-2280 SSD with a maximum capacity of 2 TB, which uses an NVMe PCIe 3.0 interface, assumes the role of the mass storage.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U is a U processor with a typical consumption of 15 to 25 watts. Its six Zen 3 cores of the "Cezanne" generation reach a maximum clock rate of 4.2 GHz, and the base clock speed is 2.3 GHz. Thanks to Hyper-Threading, the processor offers a total of 12 threads. You can use our CPU Benchmarks article for extensive benchmark comparisons.
In last year's ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 AMD, we were able to test the fastest available processor, the Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U in that case. Impressively, the more modern hexa-core processor in the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD manages to match the older octa-core CPU. In single-core mode, the Cezanne chip is noticeably faster than the Renoir CPU, and the difference between the two is small in multi-core performance.
The CPU performance is completely available on battery power.

Storage
The Samsung PM981a is an NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD that is installed in the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD in the M.2-2280 format. This is a very fast SSD, but it's slightly slower than the Hynix SSD in the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 Intel model.
It should also be mentioned that the AMD platform doesn't support PCIe 4.0 yet - a drawback of the X13 AMD.

Graphics card
The integrated AMD Radeon graphics unit, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 in this case, benefits considerably from the RAM installed here - after all, this graphics chip doesn't have its own memory and has to rely on the system's RAM. Dual-channel LPDDR4X-4266 is practically the best memory configuration currently available for an internal AMD or Intel GPU.
As a result, it's hardly surprising that the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD is ahead of the X13 Gen 1 AMD in terms of GPU performance, since Lenovo only provided the latter with DDR4-3200 memory. However, the maximum graphics performance currently available in the ThinkPad X13 is only achievable with Intel: The X13 Gen 2 Intel with the Iris Xe (96 EUs) graphics chip is clearly ahead in the 3DMark benchmarks.

Gaming performance
The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 is pretty much the opposite of a gaming laptop. However, it can still manage to run a game every now and then after work - provided the respective game is an older one and the detail levels as well as the resolution aren't set to maximum. The ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 Intel with its faster iGPU is better suited for gaming, and it also offers the option of connecting an external GPU thanks to Thunderbolt. The X13 Gen 2 AMD lacks this option.

Noise emissions
Even under maximum load, the fan only produces a quiet whisper of 31.52 dB(a). Of course, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD remains completely silent in idle usage. Luckily, this is also true for any electrical noise, since coil whine is not evident on this ThinkPad.

Temperature
As is typical for an office laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD remains almost completely cool when idle. Although this changes under load, temperatures remain within limits here as well. The maximum reading of 43.7 °C (~110.7 °F) was measured on the case's top side above the fan outlet.
No throttling can be observed in the stress test. The processor can steadily consume around 21 watts when the CPU and GPU are under full load at the same time.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43.7 °C / 111 F, compared to the average of 36.1 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 281 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 38 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 39.4 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.1 °C / 75 F, compared to the device average of 30.8 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 29.3 °C / 84.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.3 °C / 82.9 F (-1 °C / -1.8 F).
