Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 14 16:10 laptop review: The series keeps getting better
Not to be confused with the original IdeaPad 5 14, the IdeaPad 5 Pro 14 is a newer and pricier model complete with faster performance and additional features. The most notable upgrade is perhaps the move to a 16:10 2K touchscreen whereas the regular IdeaPad 5 14 uses the an older 16:9 1080p aspect ratio.
Internally, users are getting an AMD Zen 3 Ryzen 5 5600U CPU with integrated Radeon RX Vega 7 graphics for approximately $800 USD retail as reviewed. Higher-end SKUs are available with the Ryzen 7 5800U and even discrete GeForce MX450 graphics. All options come with the same 2K display.
The IdeaPad 5 Pro 14 competes with other midrange to high-end 14-inch Ultrabooks like the Huawei MateBook 14s, MSI Prestige 14 Evo, or Asus ZenBook series.

Case — Feels Like a Yoga
Lenovo uses similar aluminum alloy chassis materials for almost all of its IdeaPad models including for our IdeaPad 5 Pro 14. The system looks and feels like most other IdeaPad 5, IdeaPad 7, and even many Yoga models as a result. In this case, the chassis feels as rigid and strong as on last year's IdeaPad Slim 7 with minimal flexing around the base or lid. First impressions are stronger than on the Asus VivoBook 14, Dell Inspiron 3000 series, or the new Pavilion Aero 13 especially when it comes to the lid.
Dimensions are different from the IdeaPad 5 14 due to the 16:10 form factor of our IdeaPad 5 Pro 14. The newer model is slight thicker, longer, and narrower while weighing about 100 grams more.
Connectivity — No Support for Thunderbolt or DisplayPort
Ports are largely the same as on the standard IdeaPad 5 14 but with one important change: the proprietary AC adapter port has been dropped in favor of a second USB-C port for charging purposes. Owners are therefore free to recharge the system with any compatible third-party AC adapter instead of relying on specialized adapters from Lenovo.
There are unfortunately a couple of limitations about the ports to keep in mind. Firstly, its HDMI port is v1.4 instead of v2.0 meaning 4K output at 60 FPS is not supported. Secondly, neither of its two USB-C ports support DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 4 unlike on most Intel-powered Ultrabooks.
SD Card Reader
Transfer rates with the integrated card reader remain the same as on the original IdeaPad 5 14. Moving 1 GB of pictures from our UHS-II test card takes about 14 seconds compared to over 30 seconds on last year's Yoga Slim 7 14.

Communication — Wi-Fi 5
A Qualcomm QCA6174 comes standard for Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5 connectivity. SKUs with Wi-Fi 6 are not offered to keep costs in check.
Webcam
The 720p webcam is poor as one would expect from most any laptop. IR is included for hands-free login while a privacy shutter is absent.
Maintenance
The bottom panel comes off fairly easily after removing its five T5 Torx screws. Upgrade options are limited to the single M.2 2280 SSD and M.2 2242 WLAN module as the the RAM is soldered.
Accessories and Warranty
There are no extras in the box beyond the AC adapter and paperwork. A one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies.
Input Devices — Light and Shallow
Keyboard
For better or worse, Lenovo uses the same keyboard for nearly all of its IdeaPad and Yoga laptops. If you're already accustomed to typing on an IdeaPad or Yoga laptop, then you'll feel right at home here since there are no major changes to the travel or feedback of the keys. We find the keys to be firmer than the keys on the Asus VivoBook, Razer Blade, or HP Pavilion series while being softer than the keys on the HP Envy, Spectre, or or Huawei MateBook series.
Touchpad
At 10.5 x 7 cm, the clickpad is exactly the same as on the Yoga 9i 14 or IdeaPad Flex 5 14 and so our existing comments on the clickpad apply here as well. We find the smooth surface to be reliable for cursor scrolling no matter the movement speed, but actually clicking on the clickpad feels spongy with unsatisfying feedback. Certain actions like drag-and-drop are therefore more difficult to perform.
Display — High Quality with Excellent Attributes
Lenovo proudly advertises a 300-nit display with 100 percent sRGB colors which we can independently confirm with our own measurements. Contrast is higher than on most other Ultrabooks as well at around 1400:1 for excellent first impressions. The key disadvantage continues to be the slow black-white and gray-gray response times for noticeable ghosting especially when gaming.
AMD FreeSync is supported on the internal display which helps to reduce screen tearing if running games.
The native refresh rate of the panel is 60 Hz whereas the pricier IdeaPad Slim 7i Pro uses a 90 Hz panel. Though 60 Hz is more than satisfactory, it's tough going back to the slower refresh rate after becoming accustomed to the 90 Hz IdeaPad Slim 7i Pro.

The panel offers full sRGB coverage not unlike most other upper midrange Ultrabooks. Deeper colors are available through other Lenovo IdeaPad models equipped with OLED panels.
The display is decently calibrated out of the box with average grayscale and ColorChecker deltaE values of only 3.7 and 2.67, respectively. Calibrating the display even further ourselves would boost accuracy just slightly as shown by our CalMAN results below.

Outdoor visibility is acceptable when under shade but otherwise too dim when under sunlight. Glare from the glossy panel will be inevitable either way. Alternatives like the Dell XPS 13 or new MacBook Pro 14 each have brighter displays for improved readability if outdoors.
Note that AMD Vari-Bright is enabled by default which automatically lowers the display brightness ceiling when running on battery power. We recommend disabling this feature via the Radeon software.
Performance — 6 Cores and 12 Threads
Testing Conditions
We set our unit to Best Performance via Windows and Extreme Performance via the pre-installed Lenovo Vantage software prior to running any performance benchmarks below for the highest possible scores. We recommend that owners become familiar with the Lenovo software as important features are toggled here including BIOS updates, USB charging behavior, flip-to-start, and more.
Processor
Raw multi-thread performance is one of the fastest for any 14-inch Ultrabook with CineBench xT scores that are at least 50 percent faster than the competing Core i7-1165G7. Single-thread performance is marginally slower which is a small price to pay relative to its multi-thread gains. Performance sustainability is excellent as well as shown by our CineBench R15 xT loop results below.

Storage Devices — PCIe3 x4 Only
Most AMD-powered laptops are still stuck on PCIe3 x4 NVMe SSDs and our IdeaPad 5 Pro 14 is no exception. Performance should nonetheless be more than sufficient for the target audience especially since the WDC PC SN730 drive in our unit is able to maintain its maximum read rate of ~3400 MB/s for relatively long periods without needing to throttle.

GPU Performance — Falling Behind Iris Xe
While the Iris Xe series has proven to be a significant upgrade over the Ice Lake Iris Plus G7, AMD's integrated Radeon Vega series has only seen minor improvements over the past few years. Intel has managed to close the gap between itself and AMD in terms of graphics performance and, in most cases, will outperform our AMD system. Titles such as GTA V, Final Fantasy XV, and DOTA 2 Reborn all run noticeably slower on our AMD-powered Lenovo when compared to Iris Xe-powered systems like the Huawei MateBook 14s.
3DMark benchmarks show our Radeon RX Vega 7 to be about 5 to 15 percent slower than on last year's Radeon RX Vega 8.
