Lenovo ThinkPad X13 G3 laptop review: Endurance in outdoor use with Intel Alder Lake-U
ThinkPad is Lenovo's brand when it comes to professional laptops. There is the right equipment for every application. The X-series is particularly light and mobile, and has a strong battery life, but not necessarily the best computing performance. This is also the case for the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 with its 13.3-inch 16:10 monitor. Thanks to Intel Core i5-1235U and 16 GB working memory, the lightweight notebook is more than suitable for everyday use, though. A magnesium casing brings stability and low weight.
Our test device has to prove itself as the successor of the ThinkPad X13 G2 with an Intel processor and has to face the comparison with various small office notebooks. Among them is also the ThinkPad X13 G2 with AMD processor and the ThinkPad X1 Titanium Yoga as a convertible from the company's own ranks. The comparison devices from the competition are the HP Elite Dragonfly G3 and the Dell Latitude 13 7330 in our database. Another particularly interesting alternative is the modular Framework laptop offers itself.

Case - Light metal magnesium
We encounter a typical ThinkPad in anthracite here. The red TrackPoint in the easily replaceable keyboard, a red shining i-dot in the logo, and the classic design give the notebook its recognition value. The case is made of a magnesium alloy. This gives the ThinkPad X13 a lot of stability in the base. The display lid, on the other hand, which unlike the base is not made of magnesium, but of glass-fiber plastic, is relatively easy to deform. However, nothing creaks or scratches. Thus, the entire laptop feels high-quality and resistant.
The ThinkPad X13 has a typical size for notebooks with a 13-inch diagonal. At most, the notebook is a bit thick at almost 2 cm. The laptop does not stand out positively or negatively in terms of weight either. The case made of light metal magnesium does not seem to bring any weight advantage.
Features - USB Type-C with DisplayPort and PD instead of docking station port
Most of the ports on the ThinkPad are on the left side. There is only a USB port and a smartcard reader on the right. The SIM card slot is somewhat hidden on the back of the office laptop. Nano SIM cards fit here. Both USB-C ports offer full features, i.e. Thunderbolt 4.0, DisplayPort, and PowerDelivery. The proprietary port for a docking station from Lenovo has thus been eliminated.
Communication
With Wi-Fi 6E, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 is state of the art. The Intel AX211 module delivers very high transfer rates with the GT-AXE11000 in our test device. However, it has to be mentioned here that the installed Windows 10 does not support the 6-GHz bands. Besides that, the laptop also supports Bluetooth 5.2. The installed LTE modem can connect to the Internet apart from the available WLAN. It supports two SIM cards. The connection can be established via a nano-SIM or an eSIM.

Webcam
The Windows Hello-enabled webcam in Lenovo's ThinkPad X13 has a Full HD resolution and produces a high-contrast and sharp image, provided the lighting is good. However, the lens here has a noticeable fisheye effect. The test image below clearly shows how much the picture is distorted toward the edges. After the Windows 10 22H2 update, there is a driver error with the webcam. As soon as the laptop is turned on from energy-saving mode, the camera image is upside down. Then Windows Hello via webcam does not work anymore.
Security
The ThinkPad X13 offers many different methods for securing the device. A Kensington lock slot on the right side is available for physical security. Here you will also find the smart card reader, which enables access control. The fingerprint scanner is built into the power button. This can also be activated before booting and thus protect the device from manipulation of the operating system. The device's webcam also has the option of facial recognition. Finally, the security features of the Intel Core i5 are also available.
Accessories
The ThinkPad X13 comes safely and almost plastic-free packed, with the minimum of accessories. Apart from the included 65-watt USB-C power adapter, only the documentation is found in the box.
Maintenance
Lenovo provides extensive maintenance manuals for many laptops. The Hardware Maintenance Manual (PDF) can also be found for the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3. According to the manual, the laptop is easy to open. Inside, we find a removable SSD as well as a plugged-in LTE module. The working memory is soldered and cannot be expanded. The keyboard of the notebook is particularly easy to replace in case of damage. Two screws on the back of the Lenovo laptop secure it.
Warranty
Our review sample comes with a warranty of 36 months. The warranty status can be checked at any time via Lenovo's Commercial Vantage program.
Input devices - Flat keys
The keyboard is on the typical level of a ThinkPad. It has a pleasant pressure point. However, the key travel depth of about 1.5 mm could be a bit higher. The red TrackPoint and a touchpad are available for moving the cursor. However, we noticed that the touchpad is slightly wobbly.
Display - 16:10 with very good color reproduction
The notebook's screen is in 16:10 format with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. Thus, there is a bit more screen area available on the 13-inch display here than on a comparable 16:9 display. Lenovo specifies a 72% NTSC coverage and a brightness of 300 cd/m² for the panel.
The ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 uses an IPS-grade LCD. We measured the matte screen with an average of 288 cd/m², so it lags behind all rivals here. A high contrast ratio of 1381:1 and the matte surface nevertheless ensure a good readability of the screen, even outdoors.
The screen's illumination is not really even. We not only measure an increased brightness in the right corners but also perceive halos with the naked eye.
Besides the IPS panel with 300 cd/m², there are two other options in the configuration of the ThinkPad X13 G3. Thus, a touch display with 300 cd/m² as well as an ePrivacy display with 500 cd/m² are available. All three screens are otherwise specified by Lenovo with the same technical data.

* ... smaller is better
The display's response times are above average for an office laptop. On the other hand, the color deviations and displayable color spaces are on average for higher-end office notebooks.
The ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 reproduces the sRGB color space almost completely, but can only reproduce Adobe RGB and Display P3 incompletely. Calibrated, the screen achieves a very low color deviation. With the ICC profile from the info box, the laptop achieves a color deviation of only ΔΕ 0.8.

Performance - Alder-Lake brings slight performance increase
Our test device with Intel Core i5-1235U and 16 GB of working memory is one of the few pre-configured versions of the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3. Generally, the ThinkPad can be configured relatively freely. Eight different Intel processors from the Alder Lake generation, with up to 32 GB of working memory, various operating systems, and other hardware options are available.
Test conditions
The ThinkPad's power control is done via Windows' energy options. The familiar slider activates the Eco mode, the automatic power mode, and the power mode known from Lenovo laptops. In all three performance modes, the laptop has a boost performance of around 56 watts. Depending on the mode, the processor performance then drops more or less slowly to around 19 watts. The performance control does not allow more than 70 °C for the processor temperature in the long run.
The benchmarks with PCMark, 3DMark, and the various processor benchmarks were run in performance mode. The runtimes in battery mode were tested in Eco mode. We tested noise emissions and energy consumption according to the different loads in all three Power Smart settings.
Processor
As a mid-range CPU from Intel's current Alder-Lake generation, the Core i5-1235U is relatively powerful. A total of ten cores are available here. Two of them are P-cores, which means that 12 threads can work together. Since the processor has a high performance available in the short term, it can show a strong performance in the ThinkPad X13. As it has become typical for Intel processors, the single-core performance is primarily convincing. The new Intel processor in the X13 G3 is significantly stronger in Boost than the one in the X13 G2 but is on the same level in the long run.
Performance management in the small office laptop has its pitfalls. Thus, the performance drops heavily primarily during longer loads, as our Cinebench R15 loop shows.

System performance
Even though the working memory and mass storage work quickly in the office laptop, the ThinkPad X13 predominantly lacks processor power to keep up in the system performance comparison. The long-term load, as it occurs in the PCMark and Crossmark, is not handled so well by the slim laptop. Thus, it is noticeable here that the ThinkPad X13 G3 only delivers mediocre results in most areas, but especially achieves a strong score on the Crossmark Responsiveness Test. The memory and the CPU's boost behavior are particularly stressed here.

Mass storage
The SK Hynix HFS512 GDE9X081N is definitely one of the faster M.2 hard drives. Thus, the SSD delivers high transfer rates in various benchmarks. The transfer rate of the SSD temporarily collapses during a longer load. This behavior can also be triggered by short-term overheating.

Graphics card
The ThinkPad X13 does not offer a dedicated GPU, so it has to rely on the iGPU in the Intel Core i5-1235U. The Intel Xe with 80 EUs meanwhile supplies quite a high performance, though. Especially in combination with fast working memory, as installed here, the graphics chip can convince. In the graphics benchmarks with 3DMark and the gaming benchmarks, moderate scores and FPS respectively are achieved. Thus, the small laptop is also suitable for 3D applications with minor restrictions.

Gaming performance
The ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 only has a relatively small screen. Thus, gaming in Full HD is not absolutely necessary. With a resolution of 1366 × 768 pixels, many games run at high frame rates even at medium quality. You cannot expect much more from the Intel Iris Xe with 80 shaders.

Temperature
Although the surface temperatures of the notebook do not rise to high levels, the measured 45 °C, which the case reaches in the center and right side of the notebook, can also be uncomfortable. However, we only notice these surface temperatures under prolonged load. The laptop barely warms up during normal use.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 45.3 °C / 114 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 41.8 °C / 107 F, compared to the average of 39.4 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.9 °C / 84 F, compared to the device average of 30.7 °C / 87 F.
(±) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 35.9 °C / 97 F, compared to the device average of 30.7 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (32.1 °C / 89.8 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.3 °C / 82.9 F (-3.8 °C / -6.9 F).

Stress test
After about seven minutes in the stress test, the processor's power consumption and PL1 drop to 19 watts regardless of the power mode. Before that, we can determine a boost power of up to 55 watts. The laptop can keep the continuous power of 19 watts constant.
Loudspeaker
Actually, we should speak of a mono speaker in the ThinkPad X13 G3. The module that contains the left and right speakers is directly underneath the screen. Thus, the drivers for both channels are only about 11 cm apart.
The sound from the small speaker module is rather weak. Trebles and basses are reproduced too quietly. Thus, the ultrabook is hardly suitable for music playback.

Energy management - Even more endurance
Power consumption
The small laptop is quite frugal for the most part in energy consumption. Only when the entire available computing power is demanded from the ThinkPad does the energy consumption increase to up to 66.7 watts. However, it drops again to around 36 watts in the long run. The influence of power management is also noticeable here. Thus, the included 65-watt power supply is still loaded within its specifications.

Battery life
The capacity of the battery installed in Lenovo's ThinkPad X13 G3 is specified at 53 watt-hours. The stored energy is enough to run the laptop for over 10 hours in the practical Wi-Fi web surfing test. Even under load, the ultrabook still manages a good two hours without requiring an external power source.

Verdict - Travel notebook with a lack of space
With Intel's Alder Lake processors up its sleeve, the ThinkPad X13 G3 gets a bit more powerful than its predecessors. No matter whether it is equipped with Intel- or AMD processors the ThinkPads from the second generation cannot keep up with the third generation in the sprint. ThinkPad X13 G2 with an AMD processor performs better in the benchmarks with longer loads.
The few criticisms of the X13 G3 are cross-generational and can mostly be attributed to the limited space inside the case. A keyboard with a higher key travel would be desirable for a work laptop, the long-term performance is low and the notebook's sound is weak. Here, it is probably true that those who are looking for a particularly space-saving notebook will have to live with these restrictions. Because other ultrabooks like the HP Elite Dragonfly G3 have similar points of criticism.
For such a compact device, the ThinkPad X13 G3 primarily offers a lot in terms of connectivity. Fast WLAN 6E and an LTE modem ensure a permanent connection to the Internet. The 16:10 display is strong and the ultrabook's performance is also adequate.
The strong platform of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 is once again upgraded with the latest Intel processor generation. The stable and at the same time light device invites to travel with the laptop. Comparing the business laptop with a consumer device, you might not notice any performance differences at first. However, the ThinkPads often have a clear advantage, especially in soft skills, such as warranty period, connectivity, and ergonomics. Of course, this also applies to business competition like the very similar Dell Latitude 7330, which also offers a three-year warranty period.
Price and availability
Even the smallest ThinkPad has a big price. The various configurations of the ThinkPad X13 G3 start at around 1,500 Euros at Lenovo.
