Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 Laptop Review: The Intel model is the worse choice

In 2009 Lenovo decided to split its ThinkPad T-series laptops into two categories: In the first one there are standard T-series ThinkPads and in the second one there are thinner, lighter and more premium models, which are distinguished through the addition of an "s" to the model name. Last year the premium model had the following name: the Lenovo ThinkPad T490s. Now there is a new naming scheme. This year the successor model is called the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 1.
This model is positioned between the even thinner, lighter and more expensive Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2020 and the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1. We included in our review both of the aforementioned devices as well as the Dell Latitude 7410 and the predecessor ThinkPad T490s for comparison purposes. There are no design changes when compared to the predecessor model, which is why those of our readers who want to learn about the case, input devices and the ports should go to our review of the ThinkPad T490s.
The configuration known as 20T00044GE comes with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 256-GB SSD and the low-power display. The laptop costs 1379 Euros (~$1624) for students eligible for Lenovo’s Campus Program and 1559 Euros (~$1836) for everyone else.

Low-power display has not changed much, compared to the ThinkPad T490s
The vast majority of the 14-inch display options carry over from the Lenovo ThinkPad T490s; most of them are identical to those of the Intel model of the ThinkPad T14. The only exception: The HD (1366x768) TN panel is not offered with the ThinkPad T14s. Just like with the T14, the UHD LCD option is only offered with Intel CPUs. The second new display option, a matte 500-nit Full HD panel with touch support and an ePrivacy filter, is available with CPUs from both Intel and AMD.
Just like the T14, the T14s comes with a Full HD (1920x1080) low-power screen from AUO. The display of the T14s is slightly brighter than that of the T14. However, the response times are somewhat worse.

The somewhat cool colours can be corrected through calibration. We used CalMAN software and the Rite i1Pro 2 for our calibration. The contrast ratio of the T14s is nearly identical to that of the T14. All in all, the panel offers a great contrast ratio, thanks to its low black value.
The display almost completely covers the sRGB colour space, which is why it is suitable for semi-professional image-editing.

Performance: Good, but AMD ThinkPad T14s is considerably better
There are four CPU options on offer: two CPUs that support vPro technology (i5-10310U, i7-10610U) and two that do not (i5-10210U, i7-10510U). All processors feature four cores. Lenovo says that in the future there will be a hexa-core option, but it does not specify when exactly it will come. There is no dedicated GPU on offer. Buyers of the T14s will have to make do with the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620. The DDR4 2666-MHz RAM is soldered in, and there are variants with 8, 16 and 32 GB. The T14s comes with an M.2-2280 SSD.
Processor
The Intel Core i5-10210U is a Comet Lake-based 15-watt quad-core chip. Out of all CPU options for the T14s, it has the lowest clock rates (1.6 to 4.2 GHz). You can find out how the Core i5-10210U stacks up against other chips on our CPU Benchmarks page.
The CPU can draw over 40 watts for a short period, after which the energy consumption drops to 25 watts. In the Cinebench loop, the power draw settles at 18 watts and the clock frequency at 2.7 GHz. The CPU temperature reaches 85 °C (185 °F).
The CPU in the ThinkPad T14s performs roughly as well as the processor in the ThinkPad T490s. However, it performs worse than the chip found in the ThinkPad T14. The Dell Latitude 7410 is somewhat slower than our review device. Compared to the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s with an AMD chip, the performance of the Intel model is much lower, because the AMD T14s is more than twice as fast.
The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s does not slow down when running on battery power.

Graphics Card
The Intel UHD Graphics 620 is an integrated GPU, which has been used in laptops without a dedicated graphics processing unit for years. It performs significantly worse than the AMD Radeon Vega 7, which is found in the AMD variant of the ThinkPad T14s. If users want the best GPU performance, then they should not be looking at Intel’s integrated GPU. Moreover, the Intel UHD Graphics 620 is not fit for gaming.

Temperature
The surface temperatures of the Intel-based ThinkPad T14 were shockingly high. Thankfully, the somewhat thinner Lenovo ThinkPad T14s does not get nearly as hot. Here, the surface temperatures peaked at a reasonable 47.1 °C (116.78 °F).
In the stress with Prime95 and FurMark, the power draw amounted to only 7 watts after one hour, with the CPU temperatures hovering around 78 °C (172.4 °F) and CPU clocks around 1.2 GHz. Users should not experience any throttling in day-to-day use, because in the 3DMark 11 benchmark which we ran right after the stress test the T14s delivered normal results.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 47.1 °C / 117 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 45.7 °C / 114 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.2 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.

Speakers
There is a distinct improvement in audio quality when compared to the Lenovo ThinkPad T490s. The T14s offers a higher volume and deeper bass. Nevertheless, the speakers are not very good. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon offers a much better sound quality.
Buyers can also use the combination headphone/microphone audio jack for sound output.

Energy Management: ThinkPad T14s offers very good battery life
Energy Consumption
Lenovo seems to have done a good job of optimising the energy consumption of the ThinkPad T14s, because it draws less power than the ThinkPad T14 and the X1 Carbon 2020 with the same hardware.
The 65-watt power adapter should not have trouble supplying the device with enough energy.

Battery Life
The battery capacity has not changed (57 Wh). The ThinkPad T14s has the largest battery capacity of any 14-inch ThinkPad laptop. Thanks to a lower power draw, it is able to outlast the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 and the ThinkPad T14 Gen 1. The Dell Latitude 7410 is also beaten. However, it comes with a 4K LCD screen. The Dell laptop would have been able to last the longest in this category had it had a Full HD screen.

Verdict
The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 is a small update of last year’s Lenovo ThinkPad T490s, at least as far as the Intel version is concerned.
Unlike with last year’s T490s and T495s, this year AMD models are much more powerful. AMD chips deliver more than double the performance in the multi-core benchmarks. All Intel models have to offer are 4K screens and Thunderbolt 3 ports.
All in all, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s is a great business laptop: It has a light, robust 14-inch chassis, one of the best keyboards on the market and a bright matte screen. Moreover, it features a relatively large battery and a good selection of ports. The drawbacks include the soldered-in RAM, hard-to-access card reader and coil whine, at least with the Intel model.
Very good is sometimes not good enough: The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s with an Intel CPU is very impressive, but because of a faster AMD model, it is not an obvious choice for everyone.
We can recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s with an Intel chip, but only if you really need a Thunderbolt 3 port. Otherwise, the AMD model appears to be a much better choice this year. A review of an AMD model is coming soon.
