Comet Lake (CML) Architecture: Coffee-Lake Refresh Refresh aka two more cores

Comet Lake should be similar to the Whiskey Lake (WHL-U in the picture).
Comet Lake should be similar to the Whiskey Lake (WHL-U in the picture).

Currently we only know that Comet Lake will be another refresh of the Skylake architecture. The new feature of Comet Lake are additional cores in the top models. Three series are currently known:

  • Comet Lake Y: Successor of Amber Lake Y with a 7 Watt TDP and intended for small tablets and fanless laptops. As Ice Lake Y, Comet Lake Y should also offer now up to 4 cores (2 more than Amber Lake Y).
  • Comet Lake U: 15 Watt and with up to 6 cores intended for thin and light laptops.
  • Comet Lake H: 45 Watt mobile 4, 6, and 8-core CPUs for big gaming and workstation laptops. Higher Boost clocks up to 5.3 GHz (with Thermal Velocity Boost up to 65°C CPU temperature in the top model), Turbo Boost 3.0 and faster memory support of up to DDR4-2933 characterize the differences to Coffee Lake H.
  • Comet Lake S: Mainstream Desktop CPUs with up to 10 cores and a TDP of up to 125 Watt. Rumored to use a new socket.

Old CPU-Architecture

Die microarchitecture of the processor cores is still based on the old Skylake CPUs that was already refreshed with Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake. The differences to Coffee Lake should be minimal. Thanks to the 14nm++ process, the Comet Lake CPUs should hit high Turbo frequencies and therefore good performance results.

Integrated graphics card - still Gen 9.5

The integrated graphics card is still the old Gen 9 / 9.5 and should even bear the same name as in Whiskey Lake. See e.g. our GPU page of the Intel UHD graphics 620.

Additional Features in the SoC

Similar to the Whiskey Lake processors, Comet Lake-U also includes some additional features. The integrated dual channel memory controller now supports DDR4-2666 (up from DDR4-2400 in Whiskey Lake but lower than the DDR4-3200 in Ice Lake) and still the slower but more power efficient LP4x-2933 / LPDDR3-2133 RAM. LPDDR4(X) RAM is only supported with the new K1 stepping that should arrive in Q1 2020. Comet Lake-H CPUs now support up to DDR4-2933.

The video engine should be untouched and still support VP.9, H.265 and H.264 video en- and decode. Intel also advertises support for Thunderbolt 3 and Wi-Fi 6 (Gig+), but both still have to be added on the motherboard and are not partly integrated in the CPU (as with Ice Lake).

Stability and features over performance. The B360 is one of the few 13.3-inch rugged laptops in the market, but it doesn't skimp on accessible features or display quality. However, its use of an older Comet Lake-U processor means owners will be missing out on the more advanced features of Intel Tiger Lake.

Deal | MSI Modern 14 laptop is at its cheapest ever for just $350 USD with Core i3 CPU and 1080p IPS display

One of MSI's cheapest laptops is now even cheaper to be a great deal for bargain bin hunters. A $350 laptop isn't going to blow anyone away, but it's pretty impressive when compared to others in the same price range.

Hot contender. The Alienware m17 R4 is the latest addition to Alienware's m17 lineup. Compared to the m17 R3, there's a brand new RTX 3000 graphics card, but the CPU is identical to the predecessor's top configuration. The new 360 Hz display is also currently one of the fastest on the market.
