Acer Chromebook Spin 713 CP713-2W Review: Touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio

The Acer Chromebook Spin 713 is a slim, compact 2-in-1 device with a 13.5-inch 3:2 screen. It is primarily intended for business users. The high price (European pricing: €800/$970) may put off many potential buyers (in the US, the pricing is much better: $529). The competing devices include the Dell Latitude 7410 Chromebook Enterprise 2-in-1, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2, the HP Chromebook x360 14 G1 and the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 TM420IA.

Case and Connectivity - Spin 713 offers UBS-C ports with Power Delivery
The slim, premium-looking chassis is made of metal. The Chromebook comes in the colour scheme known as "Steel Gray". The build quality is on a good level. The housing is not very rigid, though. The battery is not removable. To reach the internal components, the bottom cover will have to be removed.
All three USB ports (one Type-A port, two Type-C ports) operate at USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds. Both Type-C ports support Power Delivery and can output a DisplayPort signal. The Chromebook also features an HDMI port.
The microSD card reader achieves decent read and write rates with our reference-grade microSD card (Toshiba Exceria Pro M501 microSDXC 64GB). The Wi-Fi module (Intel AX201) supports the following Wi-Fi standards 802.11a, b, g, n, ac and ax. Bluetooth 5 is also supported.

Input Devices - Spin 713 offers a keyboard backlight
The smooth keys of the backlit chiclet-style keyboard (five brightness levels) offer a short travel distance and a clear actuation point. The keyboard deck exhibits some flex when typing. However, it is not so bad that it proves annoying. All in all, the Spin 713 has a usable keyboard.
The smooth surface of the multi-touch-cable Clickpad (4.2″x3″) makes finger-gliding easy. The pad has no trouble recognising inputs, even in the corners. The Clickpad offers a short travel distance and a clear actuation point.
The touchscreen can recognise 10 inputs at the same time and feels very responsive. Users should not run into any trouble when using it.
Display - IPS screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio
The 13.5-inch display has a 3:2 aspect ratio and a native resolution of 2256x1504 pixels. The contrast ratio of 761:1 is quite low. We consider values above 1000:1 to be good. The brightness (387.6 cd/m²) is on a good level, though.
Unfortunately, at 40% brightness and below, the screen exhibits PWM flickering with a low frequency of 200 Hz. This is why susceptible individuals may experience headaches and eyestrain when using the Spin 713.

The Chromebook never gets very hot. Under load (Octane V2 plus Jetstream running in a continuous loop), the surface temperatures peaked at 36 °C (97 °F). When idle, the Spin 713 always stays cool.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 31.8 °C / 89 F, compared to the average of 35.2 °C / 95 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 36 °C / 97 F, compared to the average of 36.6 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 22.6 °C / 73 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 25.2 °C / 77.4 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.2 °C / 82.8 F (+3 °C / 5.4 F).
Speakers
The stereo speakers produce a tinny sound with no bass. We recommend using a set of headphones or external speakers for a better listening experience.

Verdict
The Spin 713 is one of the more premium Chromebooks (European pricing: €800/$970; US pricing: $529). It features an Intel Core i5-10210U, 8 GB of RAM and a 128 GB NVMe SSD, which is why it is capable of performing all current tasks. However, given the price tag (in Europe), the hardware configuration does not seem very impressive.
The Core i5-10210U cannot be passively cooled, but the system never gets loud. The Spin 713 also never gets hot. Users can browse the web for more than 10 hours on a single battery charge. This is why the Chromebook should be able to make it through a work day without having to be recharged. The convertible can be charged via both USB-C ports.
The main feature of the Acer Chromebook Spin 713 is its 3:2 screen. This aspect ratio lends itself well to office work.
The IPS touchscreen (2256x1504) offers a good brightness, wide viewing angles and a good colour reproduction. However, it has a few weaknesses: The contrast ratio is too low, the screen surface is too reflective. Moreover, the display suffers from PWM flickering.
Thanks to the integration of the Google Play Store, the Chromebook supports countless Android applications. The Intel Wi-Fi module (AX201) supports Wi-Fi 6. The backlit keyboard is more than usable. There are thee video outputs (one HDMI port, two USB-C ports with support for DP over USB-C).
Price and Availability
In the US, the Chromebook Spin 713 is currently available at bestbuy.com with prices starting at $529.00.
