Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F review - A great convertible with a catch
The new Asus ExpertBook B5 Flip has had its outdated Intel Core i5-1135G7 updated to the considerably newer Intel Core i7-1360P, resulting in more performance within just as compact a case. Corporate customers can also equip the model with Intel processors from the 10th to the 14th generation. Our test model is primarily intended for everyday office use and offers practical features such as an LED in the display lid, which indicates to colleagues that you are currently in a meeting, as well as Windows 11 Pro being pre-installed. Costing around US$1,700, the convertible is by no means a bargain but it does offer a truly good total package that delivers great results in almost every area. If only there wasn't a problem with its sleep state not working correctly, as we discovered in our test: Its energy-saving mode only works sporadically and oftentimes, the laptop stays on and only turns its screen off. Thankfully, the predecessor model didn't show this issue, so it will hopefully be fixed by Asus soon.
For this review, we selected a range of further convertibles to compare our test sample to—in addition to the predecessor model. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen3 and the Lenovo Yoga 9 14IRP G8 rely on the same Intel processor, while the Lenovo Yoga 6 13 represents team AMD. Moreover, we compared the premium models HP Dragonfly G4 and Asus ExpertBook B9.

Case: A high-quality and stable aluminum case
Not much has changed about the Asus Expertbook B5402F's case, meaning it continues to use a high-quality anthracite aluminum case. The biggest changes made to its case are as a result of its changed ports. Furthermore, its stylus is now integrated directly into the convertible—it has a dedicated slot for the pen. It continues to feature the US military standard MIL-STD 810H certification, meaning the new model will supposedly survive being dropped from a 120 cm height as well as freezing temperatures. The total base unit and the lid can't be twisted and the hinges barely have any give. Unfortunately, this makes it almost impossible to open the lid with one hand. The area around the keyboard can also only be pushed in with maximum pressure. Asus has also relied on a rougher surface, resulting in this area being much less susceptible to collecting fingerprint marks compared to the rest of the case.
While the previous model weighed 1.3 kg, the new Asus ExpertBook B5 Flip is unfortunately slightly heavier, now weighing about 1.4 kg. However, the convertible's footprint is fine and the device proves to be a problem-free companion in everyday life that doesn't weigh much. Despite its small size, it isn't the slimmest device within the comparison field but even so, it impresses with its practical handling and it doesn't stand out in your backpack whatsoever.
Connectivity: Two times Thunderbolt 4 and HDMI 2.1
Although the predecessor model's connectivity options were already great, Asus has improved these even more. This model continues to feature two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the right side, however, its HDMI 2.0 connection has been replaced by much more powerful HDMI 2.1. In addition, the HDMI port has been moved from the right to the left side of the device. Furthermore, the micro-HDMI port for LAN has been replaced by a full-sized RJ45 Ethernet connection. Moreover, both sides now feature USB-A ports, whereby the left has USB 3.2 Gen 2 and the right has USB 3.2 Gen 1. The 3.5 mm audio jack on the right side has been kept but now, a microSD card reader has been added, making the new ExpertBook B5 Flip's connectivity variety nearly flawless. One point of critique could be that Thunderbolt ports on both sides would have been more practical to enable you to charge the device from both sides.
SD card reader
During our test, the Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F's microSD card reader showed no impressive results in combination with our AV PRO 128 GB V60 reference card and trailed behind the average as well as the Lenovo Yoga 6 13. Its transfer speed is what you would expect from USB 2.0. Nevertheless, the card reader is practical and, as the comparison with other convertibles in this class shows, a rarity.

Communication
Instead of Wi-Fi 6 as in the predecessor model, the new Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F has an Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 module installed. Its speeds are decent and the module performs above average, especially within the 6 GHz range.
Webcam
On paper, not much has changed about the laptop's webcam; it is still a 720p HD model. Even so, the webcam's quality has improved greatly compared to its predecessor: The previous model's average Delta-E value was 8.29, while the new one achieved a value of 6.53. Of course, you shouldn't expect any miracles but thanks to its 3D noise reduction technology and its two-way audio technology AI Noise Canceling, the convertible is totally sufficient for meetings and video calls. Still, you should pay attention to how good your lighting conditions are as otherwise, the webcam won't deliver any good results. A practical feature is that Windows Hello is now supported thanks to the device's integrated IR sensor. The camera also has its own sliding physical cover.
Security
In addition to TPM 2.0, a fingerprint sensor is also included in the power button on the right-hand side of the convertible for security. The fingerprint sensor's reading speed is good and we did not experience any problems during our test. There is also an anti-theft feature in the shape of a Kensington lock slot.
Accessories
While the previous model still featured a LAN adapter and the stylus as accessories included within its scope of delivery, the new Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F comes completely without any additional accessories. However, as a LAN adapter is no longer needed thanks to its full-sized RJ45 Ethernet port and the stylus is directly integrated into the laptop, this isn't a disadvantage. However, as a result, the pen has now shrunk in size, possibly making it less easy to use for some people. On the other hand, it's really handy that the stylus can be housed within a designated compartment, leading to users no longer having to worry about its battery status.
Maintenance
Compared to its predecessor, its internal build has changed a lot. Its RAM is now completely soldered on and there is no option to swap it out after purchasing the device. In addition, the previous model featured an additional empty RAM slot which let you insert a 32 GB module (resulting in 48 GB of total RAM). On the other hand, its battery and the M.2-2280 SSD can be swapped out and so can the Wi-Fi 6E AX211 module, if needed. In order to access the convertible's innards, you have to remove ten small cross-headed screws, whereby the screw in the middle of the bottom plate has a different length than the others.
Warranty
In the United States of America, a standard 12-month warranty covers the device. For anyone who may be interested, you can extend its warranty via Asus Premium Care. Information on this, including terms & conditions and prices, can be found on Asus' website.
Input devices: Very good & water-resistent keyboard
Keyboard
Visually, lot much has changed about the new Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F's keyboard. Its enter, hash and right shift keys are now a little bigger, while the left shift key has gotten slightly smaller. The available space on the keyboard has been used well, however, there is no space for a dedicated number pad on a device of this size. Even so, the keys all have a decent size. We already liked how it felt to type on the predecessor model, however, we just thought the keys were a little too loud. Although the new model's keys aren't the quietest, they certainly show a big improvement compared to the old model—only the space bar could do with sounding a little quieter. As was already the case before, they keyboard backlighting only features one intensity setting, so you can only choose between on and off.
It is handy that the F1 to F12 keys are assigned special functions, such as the snipping tool or for switching the microphone on and off. As was the case with the predecessor model, its keyboard is splash-proof, so that a coffee mishap in the office isn't immediately fatal.
Touchpad
In terms of input devices, one of the new Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F's biggest changes is its touchpad. Although it features the same height, it is now a lot wider. As the convertible continues to feature a 16:9 aspect ratio, not much space exists for a comfortably large touchpad but even so, Asus still hasn't used the space totally optimally. The additional horizontal space, however, is a change we welcome and it helps during click-and-drop tasks moving from one side of the screen to another. In addition, the touchpad's surface has been adapted and is now a lot smoother, which also contributes to a better user experience.
The option to convert the touchpad into a number field via an icon in the top right-hand corner is still available and is particularly practical for users who work a lot with Excel spreadsheets.
Display: Brighter for better everyday use
A lot has been done on its display, too. While the predecessor model of the Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F still gave you the option to go for an OLED display, this configuration doesn't seem to be available anymore on the new version. However, it is easier for us to compare the two as the last model we tested had an IPS display. With an average brightness of 342.1 cd/m², the new ExpertBook is considerably brighter than its predecessor. This means the new model is slightly better suited for working in bright surroundings. Unfortunately, this higher brightness comes at the cost of a decline in color space coverage and contrast. While the previous model boasted a contrast of 1661:1, the new one only manages 1297:1. When it comes to color space coverage, the sRGB space is at a particular disadvantage, going from 98.9 per cent coverage to 92.5 per cent. Its DCIP-3 and AdobeRGB color spaces have also fallen slightly, at 62 and 64 per cent respectively. In everyday use, these worse values shouldn't be all too noticeable, especially since the previous model without an OLED panel already wasn't suitable for professional applications. For users looking to use the convertible as a business laptop, its better brightness should still be an improvement.

As already mentioned, the updated model shows a significant improvement in screen brightness and is therefore even better suited for outdoor use. The display achieves a very good brightness of 342.1 cd/m², which is distributed relatively evenly across the entire screen area. This increase in brightness, together with its anti-reflective surface, allows the device to be used efficiently in bright sunlight. We had wished for an increase in display brightness on the previous model.
As is usual with IPS panels, its viewing angles remain stable even when positioned more drastically. As the model is marketed as a business laptop and can also be used to present content, statistics or similar to colleagues on its display with the help of features such as tent mode, the screen's stable viewing angles are an advantage.
Performance: Consistently solid to very good results
During the test and when compared with the predecessor model, the new device shows a clear improvement. Compared to the competition, only the Lenovo Yoga 9 14IRP G8 could achieve better results on average. The Cinebench and Geekbench benchmarks showed that the Asus convertible is neck-and-neck with the other top performers in terms of both single-core and multi-core performance. So there is nothing to complain about from this aspect and the ExpertBook B5 Flip B5402F usually performs better than the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3, the HP Dragonfly G4, the Asus ExpertBook B9 and the Lenovo Yoga 6 13.
Testing conditions
Its TDP can't be adjusted by users and the My Asus software only allows you to adjust the fan speed. Alternatively, only the various Windows power modes are available. The TDPs are 18 watts (PL1) and 65 watts (PL2). The fans can get relatively loud in performance mode, so energy-saving mode or balanced mode is recommended in the office.
Processor
Within its current Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F, Asus relies on the Intel Core i7-1360P. This is a high-end CPU from the Raptor Lake P series with four performance cores and eight efficiency cores. A dedicated graphics card is not installed—instead, the model relies on the integrated Intel Iris Xe 96 EUs. It features 16 GB DDR5-4800 RAM.
The Cinebench R15 Loop revealed a stronger drop in performance after the fourth run, but it then remained stable. Comparing it to the Lenovo Yoga 9 14IRP G8, which is based on the same Intel Core i7-1360P processor, shows that even more could be possible in this aspect. After the fourth run, its core temperature averaged 66°C, so there is still some room for improvement. Compared to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3, however, the identical processor within the Asus Expertbook B5 Flip performed better, as the performance was still not stable after the fourth run. However, the AMD variant with the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U inside the Lenovo Yoga 6 13 performed better in the Cinebench loop.
The Intel processor's clock rate briefly hit 3.9 GHz at the beginning of the Cinebench run, but then dropped quickly and levelled off at just under 1.8 GHz with occasional peaks within the 3.1 to 3.3 GHz range.

DPC latency
Unfortunately, the Asus Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F performed worse than the competition when it came to its DPC latencies. Only the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3 achieved worse results during this test. The predecessor model, on the other hand, led the comparison table in this area, delivering the best values. The situation may well change at any time with future BIOS and driver updates but at the moment, the ExpertBook B5402F is not recommended for audio and video editing in real-time. In practice and when playing YouTube videos in 4K quality, however, we did not notice any problems.

Storage device
Asus has equipped the new Expertbook B5 Flip B5402F with a PCIe 4.0 SSD. Our test device's model is the Micron 2400 MTFDKBA1T0QFM with a storage capacity of 1 TB. The integrated Micron 2400 M.2 SSD's performance is acceptable but it couldn't keep up with the best within the comparison. Nevertheless, there has been an improvement in this field compared to the previous model.
