Verdict: Gets a lot of things right, save for the display
The Asus ExpertBook B5 B5404CMA is built well, with a lot of thought given into often overlooked details such as securing the Wi-Fi antennas.
The ExpertBook B5 offers a good set of connectivity options, although a more equitable port distribution on either side of the device would be preferable. The webcam can also use some improvements.
The Intel Core Ultra 7 155U together with the Arc 4-core iGPU does not top performance charts but offers enough power to sail through Office and web-based productivity tasks.
That being said, Asus has cut a sharp corner on the display side of things. The FHD+ IPS panel is a touchscreen, but its dull colors and lower measured brightness mar the overall experience.
The ExpertBook B5 is quite economical when it comes to power draws, which helps in longer battery run times upwards of 12 hours.
Businesses should negotiate with Asus for customization and pricing options, especially given that competitors like the EliteBook 845 G10 offer a lot more bang for the buck.

Specifications
Case and Connectivity: Light-weight metal build and high wireless throughput
Being a business laptop, the ExpertBook B5's design is bland but quite functional. The laptop comes in a Star Black color, measuring 19 mm (0.75 inches) in thickness and weighing a very portable 1.29 kg.
The construction is primarily aluminum with the keyboard deck made of magnesium-aluminum alloy. The ErgoLift hinges are sturdy and allow the laptop to lay 180° flat.
Lifting the lid with one finger requires a bit of effort due to the sturdy hinges, but this ensures that the display does not wobble. The lid is largely resistant to flex when twisted deliberately.
The ExpertBook B5's Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 WLAN card delivers high throughput in both 5 GHz and 6 GHz 6E bands in combination with our reference Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 router.
Both bands offer stable receive performance but are inconsistent when it comes to transmit speeds.
Customers can also configure the ExpertBook B5 with optional 4G LTE.

The 1080p webcam features a mechanical privacy shutter and is just about passable for basic video calls in adequate light. Windows Studio Effects are supported.

Sustainability
The ExpertBook B5's packaging is largely recyclable with minimal use of plastic. The chassis is made from post-industrial recycled magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis.
More information about the company's sustainability practices can be found here.
Accessories and Warranty
An MPP 2.0 stylus comes included in the package apart from the usual paperwork and the 65 W power adapter.
Asus offers a three-year global warranty for the ExpertBook B5, which can be extended up to five years. Businesses can also choose from a variety of warranty extension and add-on service plans available.
Security
The ExpertBook B5 comes with several in-built security hardware including a TPM 2.0 module, smart card reader, and a Kensington Nano security slot.
Windows Hello biometric logins can be configured using the IR camera, the fingerprint reader integrated into the power button, or both.
Additionally, the laptop supports Absolute Persistence 2.0 (Computrace) firmware for data protection and remote IT management, along with a slew of BIOS protection measures.
Asus also offers a Business Manager utility to restrict various aspects of the laptop including USB ports and registry editing along with system backtrack, file shredder, and drive encryption features.
Input devices: Satisfying input experience with multi-touch and pen support
The ExpertBook B5's keyboard offers 1.5 mm key travel and decent tactility, which lend to a good typing experience. A three-stage backlight helps typing the dark; the 1-4 number keys have transparent edges that allow more light to pass through.
There are dedicated keys for invoking Copilot and muting the microphone, along with useful shortcuts on the function row keys.
The large 13 cm x 8 cm touchpad clicks relatively quiet and glides smoothly without much resistance. Windows Precision gestures are fully supported, though we did experience the occasional missed or wrong gesture.
The touchscreen registers multi-touch inputs well, and the included MPP 2.0 Asus Pen supports 4,096 pressure levels along with interchangeable pen tips including 2H, H, HB, and B.
Display: FHD+ 60 Hz touchscreen with poor gamut coverage and no PWM
The ExpertBook B5 sports a 14-inch 60 Hz FHD+ IPS touch display. We measured an average brightness of 281 nits with an acceptable 79% uniformity.
Subjectively, the display quality is nothing to write home about, but it still gets you by for regular business work.
The glossy screen can be a distraction when working in direct lighting. There is no privacy filter layer.

Our calibration routine using the X-Rite i1Basic Pro 3 spectrophotometer and Calman Ultimate software from Portrait Displays results in significant improvements in Grayscale DeltaE 2000 values from 4.1 to 0.4.
The panel struggles with accurate reproduction of the 100% Blue and 100% Magenta colors resulting in high ColorChecker DeltaE 2000 values.

Performance: Core Ultra 7 155U offers enough for business as usual
The ExpertBook B5404CMA can be configured with a choice of the Intel Core Ultra 7 155U (our unit) or the Core Ultra 5 125H. Both SKUs come with 16 GB DDR5-5600 memory as standard.
Testing conditions
Processor
The Core Ultra 7 155U cannot match up to the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U in the HP EliteBook 845 G10 in multi-core, but single-core performance between the two CPUs is more or less on similar lines.
Interestingly, the ExpertBook B5 is up to 15% faster than the Lenovo Yoga Book 9 featuring the Core Ultra 7 155U in Cinebench multi-core tests, likely due to the lower PL2 in the latter.

Storage devices
The included Micron 2400 1 TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD is 11% slower overall compared to the Micron 2550 512 GB drive in the Dell Latitude 7450 2-in-1, but offers good sustained performance.
There's no scope for adding SATA drives, but an M.2 2242 slot is available for storage expansion.
