Asus ExpertBook B1 review - The 14-inch office laptop with Win 11 Pro and a 3-year warranty for $700
Solid keyboard, little stamina.
Asus' new ExpertBook B1 is an affordable 14-inch office laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor and upgradeable RAM. It also includes Win 11 Pro and a 3-year warranty, but you'll have to make some compromises regarding its runtimes.Andreas Osthoff, 👁 Andreas Osthoff (translated by Daisy Dickson) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - The ExpertBook B1 14 is a simple office laptop
The new 14-inch ExpertBook B1 is a simple office laptop that covers all basic requirements. This includes sufficient CPU performance, a fast SSD, and 16 GB RAM which can be easily expanded. There are also enough connections, but you'll have to do without modern interfaces. Its matte IPS display is generally suitable for working, but only covers just under 60% of the small sRGB color space, which is why colors appear somewhat pale. However, as the laptop will likely often be used alongside an external monitor in an office setting, this is acceptable. Its backlit keyboard also left a solid impression on us.
The device's single fan is activated very quickly even during simple tasks, and its battery life of 6-7 hours isn't terribly long. Its speakers aren't particularly good either. On the other hand, the laptop's included three-year warranty and Windows 11 Pro are definitely advantages.

Asus' ExpertBook B1 series consists of affordable office laptops that are designed to cover all basic office needs. They come with a three-year warranty and Windows 11 Pro. Today, we're testing the 14-inch ExpertBook B1 B1403CVA model for around $700, which comes with a matte IPS display, Intel Core i5-13420H (Raptor Lake), 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. A review of the larger 15-inch model with an AMD Ryzen processor will follow soon.
Specifications
Case & connectivity
The laptop's case design is functional and its dark gray colorway is very understated overall. However, the device's low price makes itself noticeable, as it only uses slightly roughened plastic. This also makes its surfaces quite difficult to clean. With a thickness of almost 2 cm, the ExpertBook isn't particularly thin, but its rounded underside at least makes the device look quite slim. Its finish is decent, but its stability is unfortunately only average. The middle keyboard area in particular can be visibly dented and the base unit can be twisted quite easily. The screen lid is quite stable and we were only able to provoke image errors when applying a lot of pressure. The hinges are a little too tight to open the lid with one hand, but it still bounces slightly when you adjust the screen's angle. Its maximum opening angle is 180 degrees.
The lower case cover can be easily removed and in general, the laptop's maintenance options are very good, as only the processor is soldered on. All other components (RAM, SSD, WLAN module, battery) can be replaced if necessary. In addition to the primary M.2 2280 SSD, there is also a slot for a compact M.2 2230 SSD.
All the important connections are on board, including USB-C, USB-A, HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet—but modern standards such as USB 4.0 or Thunderbolt are missing. The installed Intel Wi-Fi module (AX211) supports the Wi-Fi 6E standard and delivers good performance, but the 1080p webcam (with a mechanical shutter) doesn't take particularly good pictures and Windows Studio effects are not supported. It is not a Copilot+ laptop, but live subtitling is still available.

Sustainability
Asus hasn't provided any information on its environmental standards, use of recycled materials or CO2 footprint during the laptop's production. Its packaging consists of 95% cardboard, uses 90% recycled materials and is itself 100% recyclable.
Input devices - Backlit keyboard
The black keyboard has easy-to-read white lettering and three-level white backlighting is available in dark ambient lighting conditions, although it can't be activated automatically. Its key travel is sufficient and overall, it feels comfortable to type on. The keys don't rattle either—only the space bar is quite loud. All-in-all, this is a solid keyboard. The ClickPad is relatively small at 10.5 x 7.4 cm and a fingerprint scanner is integrated in the top right-hand corner. Even so, it feels nice and smooth and we had no problems with the pointer control, but the mechanical clicks are loud and feel cheap.
Display - Matte IPS panel
Asus equips its ExpertBook with a matte Full HD panel (1,920 x 1,080 pixels, 60 Hz) using the old 16:9 format. Subjectively, its picture quality is generally okay, as content is displayed sufficiently sharp and white content doesn't appear grainy. As only 60% of the sRGB color space is covered, colors look somewhat pale. No PWM is used and its response times are fine (no ghosting), but there is some slight backlight bleeding on dark backgrounds. Its viewing angle stability is okay.
Asus specifies a brightness of 300 cd/m², which our test device easily achieved, as we noted an average of 331 cd/m². Together with its low black value, this results in a very good contrast ratio, but this isn't enough to ensure comfortable working conditions in sunny environments. Its factory calibration, which we measured with the professional CalMAN software, shows a slight color cast towards green. Its color accuracy is also pretty poor, which our calibration couldn't change much. This is where the inexpensive IPS panel simply reaches its limits, and it isn't suitable for editing images.

Testing conditions
Various energy profiles are available in the MyAsus software. We carried out the following benchmarks and measurements using the preset standard mode.
Processor - Intel Core i5-13420H
The Intel Core i5-13420H features a total of 8 cores (12 threads) and consumes 45 watts for around 40 seconds in the ExpertBook, after which its consumption levels out at 28 watts. The CPU's performance was decent within the comparison group and the processor proved to be completely sufficient for simple office tasks. In battery mode, the chip can consume a maximum of 32/28 watts, which is why its performance here was slightly lower (-10%).

Storage device
The 512 GB SSD (M.2-2280, PCIe 4.0, 417 GB free) in our test device comes from Western Digital and delivers very good transfer rates, even under constant load. Thanks to its free M.2-2230 slot, the laptop's storage capacity can be easily expanded.

Graphics card
The integrated UHD Graphics Xe G4 graphics card can cope with normal office tasks and also has no problems with high-resolution videos—but you shouldn't expect much more. The iGPU quickly reaches its limit when playing games, which is why you should reduce the resolution and details even when running old or undemanding games. A second RAM module could improve its GPU performance somewhat, but its performance level would still remain low. The GPU's performance stays stable under constant load and in battery mode.

Emissions & energy
Noise emissions
The ExpertBook only has a single fan, which has a lot to do with its power limit of 45 watts. Although the device remains mostly silent when idle, the fan starts up quickly (~28-29 dB(A)) even when doing simple things like surfing the web. As soon as you put the processor under more load, it quickly reaches the 34-41 dB(A) range. There were no other electronic noises on our test device.

Temperature
The case temperatures stay very low during simple tasks and we only measured just over 40 °C even during the stress test. The upper left half of the case in particular heats up, but this doesn't result in any restrictions during use. In the stress test, the CPU again quickly stabilized at 28 watts and remained at this level.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41.2 °C / 106 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.4 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.4 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 34.3 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27.8 °C / 82 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-0.2 °C / -0.3 F).

Speakers
The laptop's speakers aren't particularly good overall. At least the trebles are reproduced cleanly, which benefits voice playback. However, music or movies sound very weak.

Power consumption
Our consumption measurements revealed no surprises. In idle mode, we noted a maximum of 8.6 watts and in the stress test, it briefly reached up to 63 watts, then leveling off at around 43 watts as soon as the processor's power limit stabilized at 28 watts. The 65-watt power supply unit is therefore sufficient in size. At 0.82 watts, its standby consumption is somewhat high.

Runtimes
With its 50-Wh battery, the laptop's runtimes ended up being below average and the competitors performed better during our test (especially the Acer with its Snapdragon CPU). At 150 cd/m² (82% of our test device's maximum brightness), it only managed 7 hours in the WLAN test and less than 6 hours at full brightness. One full charge takes 137 minutes (80% after 52 minutes).
