Asus ExpertBook B1 B1500 in review: Many ports on the business laptop
With the ExpertBooks from the B1 series, Asus offers inexpensive business devices that range in price from 700 to about 1,200 Euros (~$789 to 1,353) depending on the configuration. In our tests of the ExpertBook B5 and the ExpertBook B9 the devices of this series already left a very good impression on us. Now we take a look at the Asus ExpertBook B1 with a 15-inch display.
In our test configuration, it is equipped with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 and its internal graphics unit, 8 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Depending on the offer, the price is between 700 and 800 Euros (~$789 and $902).

Case & equipment - Fast WiFi 6 and Thunderbolt 4
Asus manufactures the base unit of the ExpertBook B1 from plastic and reinforces the lid with an aluminum alloy. The build quality is high and the notebook looks very robust. The dimensions are also quite compact thanks to the narrow display bezel, and the weight is also low at approximately 1.7 kg (~3.8 lb). The maximum opening angle of the display is 180 degrees.
Besides the normal ports like HDMI, USB-C and USB-A, Asus' notebook also offers a VGA and Ethernet port. Thanks to Thunderbolt 4, many other ports can be connected with the corresponding adapters. However, the lame USB 2.0 port on the right side is outdated.
A microSD card reader is also present, but it only achieves quite slow speeds of 25.5 MB/s when copying and 26.9 MB/s when reading data with our reference memory card AV Pro V60.
In the WLAN test, speeds of 1,359 MBit/s are achieved when transmitting data and 1,478 MBit/s when receiving data thanks to WiFi 6 with our reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12. These rates are very good and correspond to the level of our test field.
The built-in webcam, like most current notebooks, only displays subjects with a low resolution of 0.9 MP. Accordingly, the quality of our test pictures is mediocre. A mechanical webcam shutter protects against unwanted looks.

Input devices - Asus notebook with good keyboard
The keyboard of the ExpertBook B1 offers pleasantly large keys and a clear pressure point. Thus, typing tasks are possible without problems after a short familiarization period. A full-fledged numeric keypad completes the keyboard. Only the double assignment of the scroll, Pos1 and End keys on the rather narrow arrow keys is not optimal.
A clickpad is available as a mouse replacement, which is well suited for navigating the mouse pointer. Mouse clicks are triggered reliably via touch as well as mechanical pressure. The fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button also responded reliably during our test period.
Display - Bright screen in the ExpertBook B1
The screen of the ExpertBook B1 B1500 uses a 15.6-inch IPS panel and offers a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The maximum brightness is 305 cd/m² and thus in the middle of our test field. The screen of the Asus laptop offers a very good contrast ratio of 1,600:1 and an equally very good black value of 0.19 cd/m².
The subjective picture impression of the matte panel is good and even bright surfaces do not look too grainy. Furthermore, no PWM is used for the brightness control. However, slight screen bleeding is visible on dark backgrounds at the edges at full brightness.

Our analysis (CalMAN & X-Rite i1 Pro 2) shows that the display is already reasonable in the delivery state. There is a minimal color cast (towards green), but it is not visible to the naked eye. We can also reduce the average DeltaE-2000 deviation with our calibration (the corresponding profile is available for download above), but this does not apply to the colors. The high deviations in combination with the low color space coverage clearly show that we are dealing with a cheap IPS panel. The quality is perfectly sufficient for normal office use, but the screen is not suitable for editing pictures or videos.

The ExpertBook B1's matte display surface and sufficiently high brightness make it easy to read image content outdoors. The installed IPS panel is also very viewing-angle stable.
Performance - Suitable for daily use
Asus equips the ExpertBook B1 in our test configuration with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 in our test configuration. In addition, there are 8 GB of working memory and a 512 GB SSD. Thus, it should be suitable for diverse office tasks and simple graphics applications. Since one RAM slot is free, the working memory can easily be expanded if necessary (up to a maximum of 40 GB with a 32 GB bar).
As an alternative, the notebook can also be equipped with the somewhat stronger Intel Core i7-1165G7 and a 16 GB working memory. The CPU's internal graphics unit is always responsible for displaying image content.
Test conditions
The performance of the ExpertBook B1 B1500 can be adjusted to the user's requirements via different profiles in the My Asus app. For our test, we chose the preset "Balanced", but a performance mode and a whisper mode are also available.
Processor
The Intel Core i5-1135G7 used here is a processor with four cores from Intel's Tiger Lake generation. The clock rates are between 2.4 and 4.2 GHz, whereby the cooling system and the set TDP also have an impact on the performance. The latter is generously dimensioned with a short-term 51 watts (PL2) and long-term 28 watts (PL1).
In the Cinebench R15 endurance test, the ExpertBook B1 shows a slightly lower entry-level score than the other competitors with this CPU. However, the permanently maintained value is exactly on the level of the Honor MagicBook 15. Alternating with the latter, the ExpertBook B1 frequently occupies one of the lower places in our test field in the individual tests as well. On battery power, the Cinebench R15 multi-core score drops to just 240 points, so you lose around 70% of the performance.

System performance
In the PCMark 10 test for evaluating the system performance, Asus' notebook takes the last place in our test field, but with a difference of only 5 percent to the first place, the performance can be called competitive. In the individual disciplines, the Productivity score is the best result of the ExpertBook B1 B1500.
The AIDA64 memory test certifies quite low performance rates for the installed working memory, which has a negative impact on the performance of the internal graphics unit, for example.
In everyday testing, the notebook always ran smoothly and did not exhibit any micro-stutters or the like.

Graphics card
The Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 80EUs, internal graphics unit, is responsible for displaying image content in the ExpertBook B1 B1500. This is suitable for applications with low demands on graphics performance, such as simple image editing.
It also benefits from working memory in dual-channel configuration, which is why the single-channel RAM does not enable the full performance in our test configuration. Therefore, the results in the 3DMark benchmarks also turn out comparatively low. The 3DMark 11 performance score drops from 3,905 to 3,637 points in battery mode.
Games should also be limited to old or very simple titles. The performance other graphics units achieve in comparison to this can be seen in our GPU benchmark list.
