LG Gram 17 (2023) review: Ultralight office laptop with Core i7 and long battery life

A new year, a new Gram. The 2023 version of the slim, mobile office laptop can be considered a facelift. To a large extent, the laptop resembles the predecessor, and the CPU was updated to the current generation (Raptor Lake). A positive: The matte display introduced with the 2022 model was kept.
There are no direct competitors in our database. Comparable laptops are usually more affordable and/or bring more weight to the scale. The broadened group of competitors include devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 16, the Acer TravelMate P4 TMP416-51, the HP EliteBook 865 G9, and the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17ABA7.

Case - The Gram uses a magnesium case
The 2023 Gram is again housed in a slim case that is based on a magnesium alloy. You can choose either white or gray color, and we have a gray model here. LG uses smooth and matte surfaces. The clear contours of the laptop don't need any design attributes that stand out. The laptop does not show any faults in the workmanship: The gaps are even, and we don't notice any material protrusions.
The light construction also has its price, and the base unit and even more so the lid can be warped. But this still remains within completely acceptable limits. The hinges hold the lid tightly in place, although there is a slight wobble. The maximum opening angle is about 130 degrees, and you can open the display with one hand. After removing the bottom of the case, you can access the battery (screwed, not glued in) and the rest of the insides.

The Gram weighs barely 1,350 grams (~2.98 lb), which makes it the lightest device in our comparison field. The Travelmate P4 and the Galaxy Book3 Pro 16 bring a good 250 grams (~0.55 lb) more to the scale. Despite its 17-inch format, the Gram turns out only insignificantly larger than the two 16-inch laptops.
Equipment - Gram 17 with USB 4/Thunderbolt 4
The 17Z90R brings two USB-A connections (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and two USB-C connections (Thunderbolt 4/USB 4). The latter also serve to provide the laptop with power (Power Delivery) and are also able to output a DisplayPort signal, resulting in a total of three video ports (2x DP, 1x HDMI).
The connections are placed in the back area of the left and right sides, leaving the areas next to the palm rests free of any potential cables. The video and power connections are on the left side of the case, although it would have made more sense to offer Thunderbolt 4 on both sides.
SD Card Reader
With maximum transfer rates of 71.6 MB/s when transferring 250 jpg image files of around 5 MB each and 81.7 MB/s when copying larger data blocks using our AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60 reference storage card, the microSD card reader offers a medium-fast speed.

Communication
Under optimal conditions (with no other WLAN devices in close proximity and a close distance between the laptop and server PC), excellent WiFi data rates are reached. The LG laptop uses an Intel AX211 WiFi 6E chip. Since it doesn't offer an Ethernet port, you'd have to use the corresponding USB adapter or docking solution, if you need a wired connection.

Webcam
The 2.1-MP webcam offers a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and delivers standard fare, without being able to stand out among the competitors. It lacks color accuracy, and with a deviation of about 10, the target of DeltaE < 3 is missed. The camera doesn't offer a mechanical cover.

Accessories
Besides the usual documentation such as warranty information and a quick start manual, the laptop doesn't include any additional accessories.
Maintenance
You can access the insides by removing the bottom of the case. Some of the screws you have to remove are hidden underneath some little glued-on platelets (see pictures), and there are additional screws underneath two glued-on rubber feet. The little platelets can be removed using a small flat screwdriver. After removing the screws, you need to carefully (!) loosen the bottom of the case, which might otherwise bend easily. A flat prying tool such as a spatula turned to be very helpful with this task. After taking off the bottom, you get access to the SSD (PCIe 4, M.2-2280), the slot for a second SSD (PCIe 4, M.2-2280), the fan, the speakers, and the battery.
Warranty
LG offers a two-year warranty for the 17-inch laptop in Germany. To extend the warranty to 5 years would cost a one-time fee of 159 Euros or 4.29 Euros a month (~$176 or $4.74/mo).
Input Devices - The LG laptop offers a keyboard illumination
Keyboard
LG has equipped the Gram with an illuminated chiclet keyboard that includes a number block. Its smooth keys offer a short stroke, clear pressure point, and comfortably crisp resistance. Even though the keyboard has some give while typing, this didn't turn out to create any annoyance. Overall, LG delivers a keyboard that is suitable for everyday typing tasks.
Touchpad
Display - 16:10 panel with DCI-P3 coverage
The matte 17-inch IPS panel with a 2,560 x 1,600 pixel resolution in the 16:10 format scores with short response times and the lack of any PWM flickering. The brightness and contrast ratio meet the target values of >300 cd/m² and 1.000:1 respectively. The EliteBook offers a significantly brighter panel that also has a higher contrast ratio.

* ... smaller is better
In the state of delivery, the display offers a very decent color reproduction, and with a deviation of about 3.4, the target value of DeltaE < 3 is only barely missed. An additional calibration lowers the deviation to 1.3, also ensuring more balanced gray values. Color accuracy is a given, and the sRGB and DCI-P3 color space are covered completely or almost completely, and the Adobe-RGB color space to 85%.
You can download and use our color profile for free by using the link in the info box on the display.

Performance - The 17Z90R uses a Raptor Lake processor
With the Gram 17, LG offers a mobile office laptop that is targeted towards private and business users. The laptop offers sufficient computing performance for office and Internet applications, as well as games that aren't very demanding. Our test unit is available for about 1,800 to 1,900 Euros (~$1,990 - $2,101). Other equipment configurations are also available with prices starting from about 1,700 Euros (~$1,879).
Test Conditions
The laptop offers four manufacturer specific cooling modes (see table) that influence the cooling, noise level, and power limits of the CPU. You can switch between the modes using the "Fn" + "Q" key combination or via LG Smart Assistant, the control center of the laptop. We used the "Normal" mode for the benchmarks and "Low" for the battery tests.
High | Normal | Low | Silent | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 (HWInfo) | 28 Watt | 26 Watt | 12 Watt | 8 Watt |
Power Limit 2 (HWInfo) | 43 Watt | 43 Watt | 43 Watt | 43 Watt |
Processor
The Raptor Lake Core i7-1360P processor consists of four Performance cores (hyperthreading, 2.2 to 5 GHz) and eight Efficiency cores (no hyperthreading, 1.6 to 3.7 GHz), resulting in a total of 16 logical CPU cores.
The benchmarks deliver results at ("High") or below (other modes) the level of the current average of the CPU until now, depending on the cooling mode selected. The rather more conservative power limits are noticeable here. In battery operation, the relevant single-thread performance (170 points) is reduced to the same extent as the multithread performance (1,335 points).
The CB15 loop test shows that constant multithread load causes the Turbo speed to drop and fluctuate with each subsequent run. The processor is unable to maintain a constant level. The "High" mode ensures a slightly higher average clock speed and minimally lower fluctuations.

System Performance
The smoothly running system offers sufficient performance for office and Internet applications as well as less demanding games in low settings. However, the laptop is not designed for a constant high load. The PC-Mark results turn out good. The 16 GB onboard working memory delivers data rates that are at a normal level for LPDDR5-5200 RAM. It is not possible to expand the storage.

DPC Latencies
The standardized Latency Monitor test (with web surfing, 4k video reproduction, and Prime95 high load) revealed some conspicuous behavior. The system doesn't appear to be suited for real-time video and audio processing. Future software updates might lead to some improvements or even make things worse.
