Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 16 review: Office laptop with Core-i5 power and a long battery life

With the Galaxy Book3 Pro 16, a mobile, compact, and light office laptop, we are now looking at the third and last model of Samsung's current 16-inch lineup. We have already tested its 2-in-1 sibling, the Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 16, and the more powerful Galaxy Book3 Ultra 16 (Raptor Lake H, RTX 4050/4070). What these laptops have in common is an AMOLED panel and meager storage equipment. The competitors include devices such as the Acer TravelMate P4 TMP416-51, the Lenovo ThinkPad T16 G1, the HP EliteBook 865 G9, and the LG Gram 16.

Case - Samsung offers the laptop in two colors
The gray black (Graphite) aluminum case offers an elegant and sober look. Samsung uses matte, smooth surfaces here, without adding any showy design elements to the laptop. Alternatively, Samsung also offers a version in beige color that should be more eye-catching.
The case doesn't show any faults in workmanship. The gaps are small and even, and we don't notice any material protrusions. Although the base unit can be warped more significantly than the lid, this remains within limits. The hinges hold the lid tightly in position with a maximum opening angle of about 125 degrees, and the lid can be opened with one hand.
The slim and light Galaxy Book places in the middle of our comparison field, without reaching the compact size and particularly the low weight of the LG Gram 16.
Equipment - Samsung Galaxy offers Thunderbolt 4
Samsung has equipped the slim laptop with one USB-A connection (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4). The latter ports also provide the laptop with power (via Power Delivery) and are also able to output a DisplayPort signal, resulting in a total of three video output ports (2x DP, 1x HDMI).
The connections are placed toward the back on the left and right side, leaving the areas next to the palm rest free from any cable connections. All the video and power connections are on the left side, although it would have made more sense to distribute the Thunderbolt 4 ports over both sides.
SD Card Reader
With maximum transfer rates of 77 MB/s (transferring 250 jpg image files of 5 MB size each) and 82 MB/s (copying large data blocks), the microSD storage card reader offers a medium-fast storage speed (using our AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60 reference card).

Communication
Under optimal conditions (without any other WLAN devices in close proximity and close distance between laptop and server PC), the laptop reaches excellent WiFi data rates. The Samsung laptop uses an Intel AX211 WiFi 6E chip. Since it doesn't offer an Ethernet connection, you'd have to use the corresponding USB adapter or a docking solution if necessary.
Webcam
The webcam (2.1 MP, max. 1,920 x 1,080 pixels) doesn't offer a mechanic lens cover and delivers standard fare in terms of the quality. There is a lack in color accuracy, and with a color deviation of about 14, the target of DeltaE < 3 is missed.

Accessories
Besides the usual documentation (warranty information, quick start instructions), there are no additional accessories included with the laptop.
Maintenance
In order to be able to take off the bottom of the case, you first have to remove all the screws that are hidden underneath the four rubber feet (slotted, not glued). After that is done, you have to carefully(!) remove the bottom plate, since it is fixed tightly and could otherwise be damaged. Using a flat prying tool or other suitable tool such as a spatula, we recommend starting in the area of the fan vents on the back. After the bottom plate is off, you gain access to the SSD (PCIe 4, M.2-2280), the fans, speakers, and the battery.
Warranty
Samsung offers a two-year warranty for its 16-inch laptop in Germany. An extension by one or two years would cost 79 or 149 Euros (~$87 and $165) respectively.
Input Devices - The NP960XFG includes a keyboard illumination
Keyboard
The smooth, slightly concave keys of the chiclet keyboard, which includes a number block and three-step illumination, offer a short stroke and clear pressure point. The key resistance is decent, and the keyboard doesn't have any give while typing. Overall, Samsung delivers a keyboard here that is suitable for everyday tasks.
Touchpad
Display - AMOLED in the 16:10 format
The reflective 16-inch display has a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels in the work-friendly 16:10 format. As typical for OLED screens, it offers an excellent black value and short response times.
While the brightness of the display surpasses the requirements, in battery operation it remains below the maximum determined in mains operation. A positive feature is that the panel doesn't show any PWM flickering. The EliteBook offers a significantly brighter display.

* ... smaller is better
We can attest a good color reproduction to the display already in the state of delivery, and with a deviation of 2.3, the target of DeltaE < 3 is met. A calibration does not bring any additional improvements.
The sRGB and the DCI-P3 color space are covered completely and the Adobe RGB color space almost completely. Using the preinstalled Samsung Settings software, the display can be adjusted toward targeting one of the three color spaces. Here, we use the "Vivid (AMOLED native)" default setting.

Performance - Sufficient for Office and Internet
With the Galaxy Book3 Pro 16, Samsung offers a series of highly mobile office laptops that are run by Raptor Lake processors. The models available at the time of this test are priced between about 1,700 and 2,200 Euros (~$1,879 - 2,432). Our test unit represents the currently most affordable version.
Test Conditions
The laptop offers four manufacturer specific performance modes (see table below). You can switch between the modes using the "Fn" + "F11" key combination or the Samsung Settings software, which is the control center of the laptop. In this test, we use the "Optimized" mode for the benchmarks and the "Quiet" mode for the battery tests.
High Performance | Optimized | Quiet | Silent | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 (HWInfo) | 40 Watt | 40 Watt | 23 Watt | 16 Watt |
Power Limit 2 (HWInfo) | 64 Watt | 64 Watt | 64 Watt | 64 Watt |
Processor
The Alder Lake Core-i5 1340P processor consists of four Performance cores (hyperthreading, 1.9 to 4.6 GHz) and eight Efficiency cores (no hyperthreading, 1.4 to 3.4 GHz), resulting in a total of 16 logical CPU cores.
The benchmarks deliver results above ("High Performance" or "Optimized") or below ("Quiet" or "Silent") the CPU average until now, depending on the selected performance mode. In all cases, there is sufficient performance for everyday operation. The more relevant single-thread performance (164 points) is reduced more in battery mode than the multithread performance (1,818 points).
The CB15 loop test shows that constant multi-thread load will cause the Turbo clock speed to decrease in each successive run, before it starts varying from the seventh run. The processor is unable to maintain a constant level. The "High Performance" profile will ensure a higher average clock speed and less variations.

System Performance
The smoothly running system is able to handle office and Internet applications, as well as games in low settings. The working memory delivers transfer rates that are at a normal level for LPDDR5-5200 RAM. However, at only 8 GB, the storage capacity is extremely meager, with the price level of the laptop demanding at least 16 GB.

DPC Latencies
The standardized Latency Monitor test (with web surfing, 4k video reproduction, and Prime95 high load) reveals some conspicuous behavior. Even though the laptop shows very low latencies, the test reveals a driver problem that prevents video and audio processing in real-time. Future software updates might lead to some improvements or also make things worse.

Samsung has equipped the laptop with a PCIe 4 SSD (M.2-2280) from Western Digital that only offers a 256 GB capacity, which is not enough for a 1,700-Euro (~$1,879) laptop. While it delivers good data rates, it is not one of the top models among SSDs. On the positive side, we did not observe any thermal throttling. The Samsung laptop doesn't offer any space for additional storage media.

Emissions - The Samsung laptop can get loud
Noise Levels
The noise development under load depends on the selected performance mode. The maximum value of 46.4 dB(A) is reached under high load with the "High Performance" mode. Selecting "Optimized" drops the maximum to a moderate 38.6 dB(A), and the "Quiet" and "Silent" profiles lower the noise development even further. But this goes at the cost of the computing performance. In everyday operation, the laptop usually runs quietly or silently, independent of the mode.

Stress Test
The stress test (with Prime95 and Furmark running constantly) represents an extreme scenario to evaluate the system stability under full load. In the beginning of the test, the CPU speed ranges at about the level of the basic clock speed (P: 2.2 to 2.4 GHz; E: 2 GHz) and the graphics speed around 1,250 MHz. Continuing the test, the values are dropping.
Speakers
The stereo speakers produce an acceptable sound, even though it hardly includes any bass. For a better listening experience, we recommend using headphones or external speakers.

Battery Life
In the WLAN test loading websites via a script and the video test playing the short film Big Buck Bunny (H.264 coding, FHD) in a loop, the 16-inch laptop achieves runtimes of 10:13 and 14:21 hours respectively. During both tests, the power saving functions of the laptop are deactivated, and the display brightness is adjusted to about 150 cd/m². While running the video test, additionally the communication modules are deactivated.
The Samsung laptop delivers excellent runtimes overall, leaving most competitors behind. Only the EliteBook offers an even significantly longer battery life - with the same battery capacity. That is the result of the frugal AMD APU.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - Samsung is stingy with the storage
A low weight of about 1.6 kg (~3.5 lb), a compact case, and a realistic battery life between 10 and 14 hours result in a highly mobile laptop, despite its 16-inch format. Two USB-C ports supporting Thunderbolt 4 also serve to provide power to the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 16, allowing for a simple integration into existing workspace setups.
With the Galaxy Book3 Pro 16, Samsung delivers an office laptop from the premium segment whose purchase price is set too high.
The Core i5-1340P used here can handle office and Internet applications without any problems, just like simple and non-demanding games. The CPU masters short load peaks by delivering a lot of computing performance, but it isn't meant for constant peak performance. The heat and noise development are okay.
The amount of storage has to be called insufficient. A 256-GB SSD doesn't correspond to the price level, and we should be able to expect at least a 1-TB model, particularly since the laptop doesn't offer any space for additional SSDs. The onboard working memory also turns out meager at a capacity of only 8 GB. This is not future proof, but at least some higher-priced 16-GB models are also available.
The large AMOLED display (2,880 x 1,800 pixels, 16 inch) in the work-friendly 16:10 format scores with a high brightness, excellent contrast, stable viewing angles, a great color reproduction, and very good color space coverage. Unfortunately, it has a reflective surface.
A possible alternative could be the HP EliteBook 865 G9, which offers a lower CPU but higher GPU performance (in dual-channel operation) than the Samsung laptop. In addition, it scores with a longer battery life, expandable working memory, and a price that is a good 300 Euros (~$332) cheaper at the time of this test.
Price and Availability
In the US, versions of the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 16 are available with better equipment (16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD) than our test unit, starting from $1,550 at Amazon. A higher spec version is also available from BestBuy for $1,750, for example.
