Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G4 Intel Laptop Review: OLED instead of battery life
The ThinkPad T series has a long history, which began in the year 2000, back then as an IBM ThinkPad. At this point, Lenovo already owns the ThinkPad brand longer than IBM ever did, and the ThinkPad T series is probably one of the longest-lived laptop series of all time. Among the T ThinkPads, which are made for business customers, the ThinkPad T14s is the clear leader of the pack - it is the thinnest, lightest and most expensive model of the ThinkPad T series. Todays review device, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 4, contains Intel Raptor Lake and a premium OLED screen.

Chassis: carbon plus magnesium now again in deep black
On first glance, one might think that the design of the ThinkPads never changes. But even for this most conservative laptop series there are changes, even though they are more of evolutionary than revolutionary nature.
Sometimes, Lenovo also changes things and then reverts those changes. With the ThinkPad T14s Gen 2, Lenovo introduced a new dark-grey chassis color instead of the regular black. The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G4 represents a U-turn here, as it is now clad in "deep black". The new, old colorway certainly looks more premium than the dark grey that was used before. Unfortunately, the ThinkPad is still very susceptible when it comes looking greasy and dirty.
The construction has not changed. Lenovo combines three different materials: Carbon fiber plastic is used for the display lid, while the palmrest is made out of a magnesium alloy and the bottom cover is aluminum-made. The difference in material is not apparent from the outside - as mentioned before, the ThinkPad is painted black. Chassis stability is very good, though not 100 % perfect. In this aspect and in terms of the haptic-quality, the ThinkPad T14s G4 is superior to the ThinkPad T14 without a doubt.
As usual with ThinkPads, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 can be opened to 180 degrees. The two drop down hinges with their silver metal caps always hold the screen securely, without any wobbling.
Footprint and weight are identical to the preceding model. In comparison with the competition, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 is thinner than the Latitude and EliteBook. The Dell Latitude 7440 is a little bit more compact though. Compared with the HP EliteBook 845 G10, the ThinkPad is noticeable more lightweight with 1.3 instead of 1.5 kg.
Connectivity: ThinkPad T14s G4 with integrated LTE
For the ports, there is is no change between the Lenovo ThinkPads T14s Gen 4 and the ThinkPad T14s Gen 3. Compared with the slightly thicker ThinkPad T14 Gen 4 there is no RJ45 Ethernet on the T14s.
Communication
The WiFi performance of the Intel AX211 is not to be criticized, as the WiFi 6E module works fast and dependable.
Aside from the WiFi module, the review device also contains a 4G/LTE. The Quectel EM05-G is a CAT4 module. Not every configuration of the ThinkPad T14s G4 has a WWAN module, some models do not even have antennas. For the most high end variations of the Lenovo ThinkPad, there is also a 5G option.
Webcam
Lenovo ups the resolution of the webcam from 1080p to five megapixel. This results in a sharper image, but one that is not much improved from before in terms of colors or lighting.
Security
With the camera-shutter "ThinkShutter", Lenovo puts in a feature for increased privacy and security that corporate customers will appreciate. The same should be true for the dTPM chip, the Kensington lock slot, the smartcard reader and the Fingerprint reader as well as the infrared camera next to the regular webcam.
Accessories
Lenovo puts a modern and compact 65 W GaN charger into the box with the ThinkPad T14s Gen 4. Apart from the charger, there are no additional accessories ex factory.
Maintenance
Holding the bottom cover in place are a total of five captive screws and a few clips at the rear end. It is easy to remove, but there is not a whole lot to do in the interior. The SSD is upgradable and the WWAN module is modular as well, but RAM and WiFi module are soldered on-board. Not soldered, but screwed in are battery and fan, these components are easy to replace. Different from the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 G4, changing the keyboard is more of an involved affair, as the ThinkPad T14s G4 has to be basically disassembled to change the keyboard.
Warranty
Ex factory, Lenovo gives this German configuration of the ThinkPad T14s G4 three years of warranty with bring-in service. This warranty is also valid internationally. The internal battery gets a limited one year warranty. In Germany, this configuration also gets on-site service during the first year of the warranty period. This service can be booked for the entire warranty period as a costly add-on, same for a longer five year warranty.
Input devices: no experiments with the ThinkPad keyboard
Keyboard
When Lenovo changes the input devices, this can always provoke an outcry. Luckily, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 is unchanged compared with the predecessor ThinkPad T14s G3. The full-size keyboad (except for some of the keys on the right side of the keyboard) has a great layout with grouped F keys, dedicated PageUp/Down keys and adequately sized arrow keys.
Lenovo does not experiment with the keys them self either, unlike for example Dell with the Latitude 9440. The backlit Chiclet keyboard has a travel distance of 1.5 mm and the typical soft-landing-yet-still-defined ThinkPad typing feel. Typing on this keyboard is a joy, even though the travel distance is not as generous as it used to be on older ThinkPads.
Touchpad & TrackPoint
The touchpad of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G4 measures 11.5 x 6 cm. This is not really big, just big enough. The surface is made out of Mylar plastic, which Lenovo calls "Glass like". And truly, this plastic is very smooth and might be mistaken for glass at first touch, though the haptic quality is not quite as high with the second touch. The surface allows for effortless finger-gliding though. Not very good is the click mechanism of the hinged clickpad, which can be pressed down in the lower part of the surface area - it could be more dampened. The software-performance of the touchpad is pretty much perfect.
As always, the typical red TrackPoint is here, the pointing stick between the B/G/H keys. It is a great alternative to the touchpad and better than the touchpad for some tasks, for example when the user wears gloves or has to work in cramped environments like trains or planes. However, the TrackPoint requires the user to get used to it, which is why most will probably not use it and just depend on the touchpad instead. Part of the package for the TrackPoint are the three flat buttons above the touchpad, with the middle key acting as a scroll button when held pressed. The TrackPoint buttons work flawlessly.
Display: OLED panel with PWM and limitless contrast
In total, there are six different screen options for the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 Intel, though some characteristics are shared by all screens on offer: The aspect ratio (16:10) and screen size (14 inch).
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 300 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 300 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte, On-Cell Touch
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low-Power
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, On-Cell Touch, Privacy Guard
- 2.2K (2,240 x 1,400), IPS, 300 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 400 cd/m², 100 % DCI P3, semi-glossy
The panel stays below the promised 400 cd/m², as we measure an average of just 320 cd/m². This puts the panel well below the 2.5K IPS panels of the competition from Dell and HP. While the ThinkPad can not keep up in this regard, OLED panel is hard to beat in terms of contrast, as it is basically unlimited. In this aspect, the IPS competition can not keep up at all. Also, the OLED display has much lower and thus better response times, there is no backlight bleeding and the screen brightness distribution is very even.

* ... smaller is better
The panel can not be calibrated well for the sRGB gamut, resulting in a high deltaE of 5.0 after the calibration - even worse than the deltaE prior to the calibration of 4.9.
Color gamut coverage of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G4 OLED is excellent. sRGB and DCI P3 are 100 % covered, AdobeRGB coverage is also near complete with 97.6 %. This panel should do well for photo editing in those wide color gamuts.
Thanks to the high contrast ratio, the panel is usable outdoors, even though the brightness is not that high. The OLED screen is semi glossy, so there are some reflections, but they are toned down.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 364 Hz | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 364 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 364 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8705 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
As most OLED screens, this Samsung panel uses PWM to regulate brightness. The PWM frequency varies: With 0/10 brightness, it sits at 120 Hz. At 1/10 brightness, it increases to 180 Hz. Turn the screen any brighter and the frequency jumps to around 360 Hz. The pulse width modulation frequency is rather low and even active for 100 % brightness, so people sensitive to PWM should avoid this panel.
Performance: Raptor Lake U15 can not keep up during multicore load
The ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 is available with both Intel and AMD CPUs. Lenovo offers seven different Intel processors, four CPUs of the "U15" class (Core i5-1335U, i5-1345U, i7-1355U, i7-1365U) and three of the class "P28" (Core i5-1340P, i7-1360P, i7-1370P). For end consumers, only the U15 variants are available, as the P28 CPUs are exclusive to large business customers with this generation who order them via a "special bid".
The integrated Intel GPU always handles the task of the GPU, dedicated GPUs are no option here. Depending on the processor, the ThinkPad either has the Iris Xe w/80 EUs or the Iris Xe w/96 EUs, with the i7 CPUs having the stronger GPU. The memory is always soldered, with 16 or 32 GB LPDDR5X-4800 available. A single M.2 2280 SSD with a maximum capacity of 2 TB handles storage.
Testing conditions
Different from other manufacturers and also different from Lenovo's consumer lineup, ThinkPads do not use any proprietary software to set the energy profiles. Instead, Lenovo uses the native Windows energy management system in the Windows settings. Here, three energy profiles are selectable, which set the power limits (PL1 = performance under sustained load, PL2 = short term boost performance) and regulates the power consumption of the processor and system:
- Best battery life: PL1 11 Watt / PL2 11 Watt
- Balanced: PL1 14 Watt / PL2 25 Watt
- Best performance: PL1 24 Watt / PL2 50 Watt
Processor
The Intel Core i7-1355U is a processor of the "Raptor Lake" generation and part of the U15 series. As most U15 chips, this processor has two performance cores and eight efficiency cores, so a total of 10 cores. The clockrates range between 1.7 and 5 GHz (P cores) and 1.2 to 3.7 GHz (E cores). For direct comparisons with other processors, our CPU list can be used.
With a sustained load of 24 W, the U15 CPU of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G4 Intel can manage well. The performance is especially good when it comes to the single core discipline and short term multicore-boost performance.
Less good is the multicore performance under sustained load. It lands in the midrange of all the Raptor Lake ThinkPads we were able to test so far. Especially compared with the ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 Intel, the ThinkPad T14s G4 Intel is faster. However, compared with the AMD based EliteBook 845 G10, the T14s pales, no matter if the HP uses the U or HS class CPUs. The AMD predecessor ThinkPad T14s G3 AMD is also much faster here. The T14s G4 Intel is only able to beat the AMD laptops quite clearly in terms of single core performance.
We did not detect and CPU performance limitation in battery mode with this Lenovo laptop.

DPC latency
The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 Intel has DPC latency problems, which can lead to a stuttering system during video/audio editing. We did not see many dropped frames in the Youtube test, however. Also, this problem can often quickly be solved with a driver update.
