Huawei MateBook 14 (2021) review: MacBook Air with touch?
The Huawei MateBook 14 2021 is a classic ultrabook with a 3:2-format touchscreen. It can be placed in the mid-range, below the MateBook X Pro and above the MateBook D 14. Correspondingly, for about 1100 Euros (~$1189), it is of course also more affordable than most of the flagship models. You can even get it on sale for 100 to 150 Euros (~$108 - $162) less most of the time.
Apple's MacBook Air M1 and the Schenker Vision 14, which are its direct competitors, fall into a similar price segment, together with Microsoft's Surface Laptop 3 and the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14. Other comparisons that should be interesting include Huawei's in-house MateBook 14s and MateBook X Pro.
In addition to the Intel Core-i7 version we are testing here, there is also an otherwise identical MateBook 14 with AMD Ryzen CPUs, which we are able to test at the same time and also compare to the Intel model. In terms of the price, the model with the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U costs about 100 to 150 Euros (~$108 - $162) less than the Intel version.

Case: Space grey aluminum and slim bezels
Like its name, the modest aluminum case reminds us of an Apple MacBook at first glance. While the workmanship is good, it doesn't reach the level of that of the MacBook Air M1. The base and display lid are very resistant to warping, but the hinges wobble noticeably when you change the display angle, for example.
The maximum opening angle is 150 degrees, and you cannot open it using only one hand. The keyboard deck bends more under pressure than we would like, which also has a marginal effect on the typing experience.
Huawei uses "Space Grey" to describe the color, while nothing has changed in the case for several generations - including the color. Subjectively and haptically, the MateBook 14 2021 offers a high-quality feel, but there is still room for improvement.
At a similar width of 307 mm (~12 in) - versus 305 mm of the MacBook Air M1 - the Huawei MateBook 14 offers a larger 14-inch display in the 3:2 format, which is more web and office friendly. The bezels are also significantly smaller, resulting in a screen-to-body ratio of 90%.
On the other hand, the weight of 1.49 kg (~3.28 lb) is fairly heavy for an ultrabook of this size, but the MacBook Air is also not the lightest subnotebook either at 1.3 kg (~2.9 lb). While its height of 15.9 mm (~0.63 in) can be considered slim, the MacBook Air looks again much slimmer due to its pronounced wedge shape. Microsoft's Surface Laptop 3, Lenovo's Yoga Slim 7, and the in-house MateBook X Pro are even slimmer, while the light Schenker Vision 14 does more justice to the ultrabook concept with its 1-kg (~2.2 lb) weight.
Comparison with Apple's MacBook Air M1
Equipment: Fast Wi-Fi 6 and USB-A 3.2 in the MateBook 14
We are pleased to see that the MateBook 14 2021 includes two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 connections, while the predecessor still used the USB 2.0 standard in one of the ports. In addition, there is also an HDMI connection, an audio port, and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 connection that supports DisplayPort and is the only way to charge the laptop.
You even have to make do without Thunderbolt in the Intel model. However, this is more than what other ultrabooks can offer overall, including the USB-C-only MacBook Air.
Communication
Almost all the subnotebooks in our test field share Intel's AX201 card using the Wi-Fi 6 standard. At about 1.4 Gbit/s, the send and receive performance is very good. The MacBook Air remains significantly behind at about 0.6 Gbit/s here, while the MateBook 14 AMD remains within similarly slow ranges. Lenovo's Yoga Slim 7 also only reaches this slow speed, despite using the same Intel AX201.
Webcam
The 720p webcam from Huawei is almost a classic already. You can activate it by pressing on the webcam key and it will then pop-up from this key. The resulting camera angle gives justice to the "nose cam" designation. Otherwise, the quality is average, just like in other laptops.
Accessories
Besides the compact 65-Watt charger with USB-C connection that weighs 200 grams (~7 oz), there are no other included accessories. The packaging is simple and functional. Apparently, Huawei doesn't care much about recycled materials. Huawei offers USB-C docking stations that are universal for all their devices that support USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort.
In terms of software, "Huawei Share" is preinstalled, allowing wireless transfer of data and display contents from Huawei smartphones and tablets.
Maintenance
After removing ten Torx (T5) screws, you still need a prying tool to open the case. There aren't many maintenance options. While the M.2 SSD can be replaced, the Wi-Fi module is soldered in. The dual-fan system can be completely removed and cleaned, and the screwed-in battery should also be fairly easy to replace.
Warranty
Huawei offers a 2-year bring-in warranty with free shipping for the MateBook 14.
Input Devices: MateBook 14 with a large, accurate touchpad
Keyboard
The keyboard possesses a two-step illumination and sufficiently large keys with a fairly soft stroke and noticeable pressure point. However, the keys are triggered too easily, leaving a slightly too spongy impression for the taste of our tester. The key stroke isn't too short, particularly for an ultrabook. The keyboard cover bends under pressure and while typing, which causes some minimal annoyance. The Enter key also clatters a bit.
However, overall you can still type accurately, quickly, and for longer periods of time using the keyboard. Although we would have preferred function keys such as "Home" and "End." By the way, the power button also houses a reliable fingerprint reader.
The MacBook Air has a significantly shorter stroke, but the pressure point is much crisper. Overall, it appears to be of a higher quality and we like it much better. Lenovo's Yoga Slim 7 also offers a better keyboard.
Touchpad
The 12 x 7.2 cm (~4.7 x 2.8 in) touchpad offers very good sliding characteristics, moving the mouse pointer accurately across the display surface thanks to the Windows Precision driver. Multi-touch gestures can be executed quickly, and the click keys that are integrated in the bottom area trigger mouse clicks reliably and with plenty of feedback. On the other hand, the MacBook Air has by far the best touchpad.
Display: The MateBook 14 shines also with its 3:2 touchscreen
The 14-inch display in 3:2 format not only shines visually, but also in terms of some of its measurements. Even if it doesn't quite reach the 100% coverage of the sRGB color space promised by the manufacturer, the value is still very good at 97.4%. However, things look more average in the expanded color spaces, such as 67.5% of the AdobeRGB color space. At an average brightness of 367 cd/m² (408 cd/m² peak), the manufacturer specification of 300 cd/m² is exceeded significantly, even if the predecessor and the AMD sibling model (without touchscreen) are again brighter at about 450 cd/m².
At 2,510:1, the contrast we measured also jumps to previously unknown highs for IPS panels (1,500:1 according to the manufacturer), leaving the competitors behind, except for the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 which has an even minimally higher contrast at 2,646:1. By the way, with a value of 98.5% in the DCI-P3 area, the M1 MacBook Air offers the best color accuracy. And in the Delta-E values as well, only the MacBook offers a better performance.
The resolution of 2,160 x 1,440 and its resulting pixels density of 185 ppi, together with the touchscreen functionality, round up the display functionality. Even if our test unit shows some screen bleeding and clouding, this will remain unnoticeable in everyday operation.

* ... smaller is better
Corresponding to the manufacturer's promise, we are unable to measure any PWM flickering. The response times are fairly good but insufficient for fast games. But since with a 60-Hz screen and integrated graphics unit, the device isn't a gaming laptop anyways, this can be ignored.

The Huawei MateBook 14 can definitely be used outdoors, since it is quite bright. However, direct sunlight still poses too high demands on the highly reflective display. You'd need at least 500 cd/m² or more to handle that.
As typical for IPS screens, the viewing angles can also be called very good for the Huawei MateBook 14. According to our experience, only OLED displays can ensure even more perfect viewing angles.
Performance: The speedy Intel Core i7-1165G7 is surpassed by AMD
The MateBook 14 continues to be offered with four processor variants: Intel Core i5-1135G7, Intel Core i7-1165G7 (our test unit), as well as the hexa-core AMD Ryzen 5 5500U and octa-core Ryzen 7 5700U. In the AMD models of the predecessor, 45-Watt CPUs were used, while there are now only low-power processors under the hood.
There is also a change in the graphics: Dedicated GPUs such as the Nvidia GeForce MX350 of the predecessor aren't used anymore. So Intel's Xe G7 or AMD's RX Vega have to suffice here. 8 or 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM are soldered in. This means that Huawei's MateBook 14 doesn't use the more efficient LPDDR4x RAM, which is also up to 77% faster in the AIDA64 memory benchmark, by the way. It also results in some benefit for the iGPU, in the MateBook X Pro, for example. The storage solution is a M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD.
Processor
The quad-core processor of our test unit is an Intel Core i7-1165G7 with a clock speed of between 2.8 and 4.4 GHz. In our Cinebench-R15 loop, the processor starts out at 4x4 GHz with a consumption of 40 watts. After one second, this drops to 3.6 GHz and a consumption of 32 watts. Even before the one-minute mark is reached, it starts changing periodically between 3.5 and 4.6 GHz, with some rare drops to 2 GHz. Over the whole period of the test loop, the average is 3.6 GHz with 33 watts, which is a very good result. During this time, the core temperatures increase to more than 90 °C (194 °F).
With this, the predecessor is surpassed by a total of 66%. The sibling model with the AMD hexa-core CPU is again 40% faster, and the octa-core Ryzen 7 5700U should set the standards here. The MacBook Air with its M1 chip is about 10% faster in the virtualized Cinebench benchmark. However, the difference turns out much larger in native applications.
Overall, the performance of the MateBook 14 is very good and only drops by 10% in the course of the test. In battery operation, the performance is reduced by only 5%.

System Performance
The PCMark 10 results are at a good level and show an improvement by almost 50% compared to the predecessor. Even Microsoft's Surface Laptop 3 with an Intel CPU of the 10th generation remains far behind here.
The subjective system performance is very speedy, but systems with AMD processors feel even slightly snappier, for example, when opening multiple Windows and applications. However, the MacBook Air M1 is without a peer in this regard, and subjectively everything runs without any delays in that operating system, including the browser.

DPC Latencies
LatencyMon reports that the MateBook 14 is also suited for loss-free, real-time audio and video processing. This is a very good result that is also shared with the AMD model. There were no problems when reproducing Youtube videos in 4K quality, and we only noticed the slightly higher CPU load during this time.

Storage Solution
The built-in Samsung PM991 PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD in the M.2-2280 format offers 512 GB of storage space. Its speed is fairly disappointing in almost all the scenarios, while the predecessor offered a significantly faster SSD.
The PCIe 4.0 SSD in the Schenker Vision is by far the fastest. However, Huawei partitions very tightly here, so that initially only 70 GB are available on partition C, with the rest being on partition D. You can find additional SSD comparisons in our database.
