Valve announced today that it would no longer support the Steam Client on macOS 10.14 or earlier versions starting February 15th. The decision comes as a result of Apple dropping support for 32-bit applications with macOS 10.15.

Bad news for Mac gamers with an older Macbook: Valve will no longer support Steam on older versions of macOS starting in February.

In an announcement posted on the Steam website, Valve announced that support for the Steam Client for macOS 10.14 and earlier will cease as of February 15, 2024. In other words, the Steam Client will no longer receive updates (either software or security) on these versions of macOS, and Steam Support won't be able to offer help to users.

Valve stated the decision to drop support for Steam is a result of Apple dropping support for 32-bit applications with macOS 10.15 Catalina. Since Steam uses a version of the Chrome web browser for its storefront through the Steam Client, and since Google no longer supports 32-bit versions of Chrome on macOS, the macOS version of the Steam Client must transition to 64-bit only.

Dropping support for 32-bit versions of Steam means that Valve also won't support 32-bit games on macOS starting in February.

This decision should affect a relatively small percentage of macOS gamers on Steam. According to Valve, over 98% of Steam customers with a Mac run macOS 10.15 Catalina or newer, so less than 2% of users will be left out to dry. It should also be noted that Apple ended support for macOS 10.14 back in 2021.

If you're a Mac gamer running a machine older than the 2012 MacBook Pro, it is now time to upgrade if you want to keep using Steam.
