At first glance, the MacBook Pro M3 looks confusingly similar to the more expensive models with the M3 Pro, but iFixit now reveals the extensive changes inside in detail.

After the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 failed to completely win us over in our detailed review, a teardown video from iFixit (embedded below) reveals many of the problems we criticized in detail, including the single fan and the soldered, undersized RAM.

The good news is that the basic model can be opened just as easily as the more expensive models by simply loosening a few screws on the underside. The battery and trackpad can then be replaced without much effort. Also positive news is that models with 512 GB memory now have two NAND chips instead of just one, which resulted in significantly higher speeds in our review.

The USB-C ports, the MagSafe connection and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor can be replaced independently of the mainboard, but the latter must first be verified by Apple before a replacement part becomes functional. iFixit criticizes the fact that the RAM cannot be expanded, which is particularly problematic for the base model as it only comes with 8 GB of RAM. The SSD is also firmly soldered to the mainboard.

Even if the housing of the MacBook Pro makes a number of common repair jobs comparatively easy, Apple still prevents them via software. This applies not only to the fingerprint sensor, but also to the hinge sensor and the display, which shows annoying image errors after being replaced without Apple's "calibration", even if it is an original panel from another MacBook Pro. For this reason, iFixit gives the 14-inch MacBook Pro a rather low repair rating of 4 out of a possible 10 points.
