Low-power compression-attached memory (CAM) is out there in the form of the LPCAMM2 module from Micron found in 2024's Lenovo ThinkPad P1.
It is backed to supplant the conventional SO-DIMM form-factor as it is up to 64% smaller and is rated to use up to 61% less power in operation - and also because it is, if anything, even more interchangeable despite its potentially superior connection to a given CPU.
Accordingly, iFixit now endorses it as the RAM solution of the future, even compared to the Unified Memory tech of Apple's M-series chips - mostly because you are not necessarily stuck with 8GB in a base model.
An LPCAMM2 swap will indeed come easy to a ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 owner, as demonstrated by the teardown channel: it is held down by just 3 screws with a straightforward removal and replacement process clearly outlined right on the module's shield.
The Gen 7 has yet to join its predecessor on Amazon, however.
