Fairphone 5 impresses in iFixit teardown with convenient repair options and a large range of spare parts
According to the manufacturer's marketing claims, the Fairphone 5 can be disassembled and repaired so easily that the most important components can be simply replaced using the included screwdriver. A teardown by iFixit now shows that Fairphone hasn't really promised too much.
The Fairphone 5 is one of the very few smartphones to receive the best possible iFixit repair rating of 10 points. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the back is only attached with clips, making it much easier to remove than most competitors who often glue it onto the case. The battery is also not glued, while Fairphone has also connected the plug covers to the housing on the new model so that they no longer get lost during repairs.
All three cameras can be individually replaced - an upgrade compared to the previous model, where the dual camera had to be replaced as a single unit if a camera was damaged. The USB-C connector can be replaced more easily than before because the short cable that connects the port to the board is now more accessible.
When replacing the antenna cables, a label on the mainboard indicates which cable goes into which connector. iFixit's only criticism is that the fingerprint sensor is almost impossible to repair due to a lack of spare parts. Otherwise, most other components of the Fairphone 5 are available via iFixit's online shop. Further details about the Fairphone 5 can be found in our detailed review.
