6000 nits and more: Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the very first Xiaomi 15 display rumors
Smartphone displays with just 1000 nits seem far behind these days. 3000 nits are no longer a sensation since OnePlus advertised 4500 nits at its China launch of the OnePlus 12. One thing is clear: these values are purely for show. Most areas of application apart from HDR content do not always utilize such high brightness levels, as they speciify the maximum possible brightness and this is not always actually achieved in tests.
Nevertheless, the advertised brightness values of smartphones are likely to go in only one direction in the coming months: upwards. Currently, there is talk of around 6000 nits and potentially more. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra, expected in mid-2024, should "easily reach" this value, as leaker Kartikey Singh suggested on X (formerly Twitter). Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station also spoke in one of his most recent postings on the Weibo platform about major progress in the "full-screen brightness" of the flagship camera, which is to be launched in the first half of 2024.
And he also provided the very first information on plans that Xiaomi is currently brewing up for the Xiaomi 15 generation. Accordingly, the display edge of the successor to the Xiaomi 14 Pro will supposedly shrink to a sensational 0.6 mm and become symmetrical on all four sides thanks to the next generation of QHD displays from TCL CSOT. The Xiaomi 15 Pro, which is reportedly equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 super chip, is expected to beat brightness records. Claims about the regular Xiaomi 15 are also very specific: it will come with a flat, dynamic 6.36 inch LTPO AMOLED with a resolution of 2670 x 1200 and very thin edges, offering 1400 nits full-screen brightness together with up to 15-20% in energy savings.
