The best is yet to come: As part of its Google Pixel 8 presentation, the Pixel team also announced a feature that is intended to significantly improve nighttime video recordings on the Pixel 8 Pro, but will only be delivered as part of an update. An analysis of the latest Google Photos app provides clues of how the soon-to-be launched feature will actually work.

Like many of the latest Google AI functions on the Pixel 8 (available at Best Buy) and Pixel 8 Pro (available at Best Buy) "Video Boost" is also based on algorithms that will run on Google's cloud servers; this much was already clear in advance. The feature, which is intended to drastically improve video quality in dark environments as boldly proclaimed at the launch event, will be integrated into Google's central Photos app. The first clues of this feature can already be found in the latest versions of Google Photos, namely 6.61 and 6.63, as an analysis by 9to5Google shows. A demonstration by Google shows what Pixel 8 Pro users can expect with Video Boost:

How the feature will actually work in everyday life

Some code passages provide initial clues as to which steps users need to follow in order to "boost" a recorded video. As the instructions below make clear, you definitely need a Google account and some time, as uploading the video to the cloud and processing it through Google's AI takes time.

Users thus have to activate backup or upload an individual video. Once editing is complete, users will receive a notification from Google on their smartphone. Further information in the app indicates that the enhanced video can be exported in AVC or HEVC format and that users will be asked which version of the video they want to keep as the main version or whether they only want to keep the edited version. According to Google, the feature will be rolled out this year.

“To boost your videos, turn on backup in settings, or back up this individual video”
“To use Video Boost, you need to back up this video, which requires signing in with your Google Account”
“Waiting to back up video”
“Backing up for Video Boost. This may take some time. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”
“Boosting video quality. This may take some time. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”
“This may take some time depending on video length, internet speed, and battery status. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”
“Boosting your video won’t affect your phone’s battery life or performance, but it may take some time. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”
