Google Pixel 8 Pro falls short of Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Xiaomi 13 Ultra with disappointing battery performance
DxOMark has now subjected the Pixel 8 Pro (curr. $799 on Amazon) to its set of battery life and charging tests, shortly after publishing equivalent reports for the Pixel 8 and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Like the Pixel 8, the Pixel 8 Pro struggles in this regard when compared to other modern flagships, even with a 5,050 mAh battery. Ultimately, DxOMark awarded the Pixel 8 Pro a battery score of 111 points, which puts it outside the website's top 100 devices for battery and charging performance.
As we also observed in our review, the Tensor G3 in the Pixel 8 Pro has a higher average power consumption under load than its Apple and Snapdragon peers. Consequently, the Pixel 8 Pro lasted a meagre 23:08 hours when streaming music and 24:38 hours during calls, which falls far short of even its predecessor. By contrast, results of 10:38 hours when gaming and almost 9:30 hours with its GPS module activated are comparatively good.
Still, competitors like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Xiaomi 13 Ultra all outlast the Pixel 8 Pro in DxOMark's tests. Likewise, it takes a while to fully recharge the Pixel 8 Pro, despite its advertised 30 W wired charging capabilities. As always, Google's latest flagship does not pump 30 W into its battery until it reaches 100% charge remaining.
Instead, the Pixel 8 Pro takes 49 minutes to go from 0-80% but another 51 minutes for an additional 20% charge. The same applies when wirelessly charging the device, although it can top itself up significantly faster than the Pixel 7 Pro. Either way, the Pixel 8 Pro puts in a below-average performance for its class; please see our review for more impressions and tests.
