The Google Pixel 8a has a better display than the much more expensive Apple iPhone 15, according to a detailed analysis by DxOMark. The 120 Hz OLED panel is particularly impressive due to its high brightness, but also has some weaknesses.

As the Google Pixel 9 series is set to become much more expensive, the Pixel 8a will soon be Google's only smartphone available at a mid-range price. After the Pixel 8a's range of functions and bright display had already impressed us in our detailed reviewDxOMark has now published a detailed analysis of the display.

The Pixel 8a has an OLED panel with a diagonal of 6.1 inches, a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080, a frame rate of 120 Hz and a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. As such, the screen achieved an impressive 145 points in the DxOMark analysis, placing it 23rd on the best list. With this score, the device even outperforms the more expensive Apple iPhone 15 by five points, which is hardly surprising given that Apple installs a 60 Hz slow panel here.

In DxOMark's tests, the Pixel 8a impresses above all with its high panel brightness - in direct sunlight, the screen reaches 2,049 nits across the entire surface, which puts the smartphone practically on a par with the iPhone 15 and far ahead of competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G. The display also impresses with smooth video playback, a fast touchscreen response time and a detailed display of HDR videos, even at low screen brightness.

However, the display of the Google Pixel 8a is not completely free of problems. The panel has a minimal orange color cast and color shifts can occur at steep viewing angles. SDR content sometimes appears too dark when viewed indoors, where the brightness sensor does not activate the High Brightness mode. Just like in our review, DxOMark detected a PWM frequency of 240 Hz, which may bother sensitive users.
