Google Pixel 8 struggles in new battery analysis tests against other modern flagships
The Pixel 8 (curr. $549 on Amazon) has plenty of things going for it, including a stellar set of cameras. As we have discussed previously, the smaller option in the Pixel 8 series has been shown to outperform the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Galaxy S23 Ultra and even the Pixel 7 Pro in camera tests, which our recent review underlines. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the device's battery life.
In summary, we observed the Pixel 8 only lasting 13:30 hours in our WiFi v1.3 test, despite having a larger battery capacity than many of its peers. Although not as large as the 5,050 mAh capacity in the Pixel 8 Pro, the Pixel 8 ate through its 4,575 mAh battery significantly faster than the Edge 40, Galaxy S23, iPhone 15 and Xiaomi 13, which make do with 4,400 mAh, 3,900 mAh, 3,349 mAh and 4,500 mAh batteries, respectively.
The Pixel 8 outlasted its predecessor, though, which DxOMark's detailed battery analysis reinforces. An overall rating of 103 points puts the Pixel 8 in 120th place on DxOMark's leaderboard, though, and just 5 points ahead of the Pixel 7. In particular, DxOMark criticises the Pixel 8's 22-hour and 16-hour runtimes when streaming music and making calls. However, its nearly 5 hours of continuous camera use and 10 hours of gaming are on par with other modern smartphones.
It is a similar story when it comes to charging too, with a full charge taking 1:36 hours over a wired connection. At the same time, this is 24 minutes faster than the Pixel 7, but its peak 25 W charging has been surpassed by many competing handsets, including the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13T. The same is true of wireless charging, which took 3:20 hours at a peak of just under 14 W. Thankfully, the Pixel 8 succeeds in other areas, details of which we have covered in our in-depth review.
