Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series receive new camera features and improvements with latest update
Google has started rolling out a new Pixel Camera app update following October's release of Pixel Camera 9.1. Now on v9.2, the Pixel Camera remains compatible with all Pixel devices running Android 14, even those for which Google has dropped monthly update support. Thus, Pixel Camera 9.2 should be available to download on the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 onwards.
According to Google, Pixel Camera 9.2 allows the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro (curr. US$799 on Amazon) to disable Ultra HDR. Additionally, Google has enabled its new HDR feature on older Pixel handsets like the Pixel 6. For reference, official Ultra HDR support has headed to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro as well. Please see our Ultra HDR launch article for technical details and examples of the software in action. Pixel Camera 9.2 also introduces an option of switching colour spaces from sRGB to DCI-P3.
Moreover, Google has simplified the camera app's UI by removing exposure, shadows and white balance controls from either side of the viewfinder. Instead, Pixel Camera 9.2 repositions these directly above the shutter button, thereby exposing more of the viewfinder. Incidentally, flash and self-timer buttons can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to reveal an associated settings window. Pixel Camera 9.2 should be available now, although it could take a few days for the app update to proliferate globally.
