Fujifilm X100V replacement rumour dashes OIS dreams as lens upgrade off the table for next-gen rangefinder-style mirrorless camera
A few months ago, we reported on a Fujifilm X100V successor rumour that claimed the new rangefinder may get an updated lens when it releases in 2024. As it turns out, according to Fuji Rumors, the new X100V replacement looks to be keeping the same 23 mm f/2.0 lens as found on its predecessor.
By all accounts, the compact 23 mm Fujinon lens found on the X100V is well-liked for its sharpness, quick focus, and lack of distortion — especially as an all-rounder lens. The only major feature that is missing from the existing X100V is optical or in-body image stabilisation, which was a feature rumoured to arrive with the new X100V.
Despite the corrections, Fuji Rumors maintains an early 2024 launch for the new X100V, although the name of the upcoming camera is unclear.
This rumour makes sense, because the Fujifilm X100V itself featured a refreshed lens, so it's likely that Fujifilm can still get some mileage out of the current 23 mm unit on the X100V. The most disappointing part of this rumour update is the fact that it means the X100V successor likely won't feature optical image stabilisation (OIS), which would be a big advantage, especially in low-light situations often encountered in street photography.
Still, the current rumour stack indicates a relatively impressive upgrade for the X100V line-up is on the way, with a 40-MP sensor slated to arrive with the new camera. The sensor upgrade would allow for much better digital zoom, letting photographers use the camera more comfortably for portrait photography without losing its street photography chops.
Fujifilm has also taken some impressive steps in terms of video with its recent releases, like the 6K open-gate mode on the Fujifilm X-S20 (curr. $1,299 on Amazon), so it wouldn't be surprising to see some of those features make their way to the future X100V.
If you can't wait for the launch of the new X100V, you can also grab a Fujifilm X-T5 on Amazon.
