To date, Samsung has provided a rather unimaginative option for protecting the battery in its Galaxy phones. The competition, for example from Apple, is much more modern, but the lead is likely to shrink again with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series in January 2024, as a leaker has now shown in the first screenshots. Older Galaxy phones should also benefit from the One UI 6.1 update in 2024.

Anyone who currently buys a Samsung phone that runs One UI, whether an older version or the One UI 6.0 based on Android 14, has just one option in the battery settings to protect its battery from aging too quickly. Instead of always charging it to 100 percent, you can set the limit to 85 percent, but this permanently forgoes a good 15 percent of its possible capacity.

Other manufacturers, such as Apple in its iPhones, already offer more intelligent protection options that only charge up to a similarly high limit overnight, for example, but then quickly recharge to 100 percent shortly before getting up in the morning. This is exactly what Samsung seems to have copied for the next One UI version, as the X user @tarunvats33 explains in his latest post (see below). According to this, the "Protect Battery" option in the OneUI 6.1 version will be transformed into a separate menu item called "Battery protection" and will have three options:

"Basic" continues to charge the battery fully but stops when it reaches 100 percent and only continues charging when it drops to 95 percent. The "Adapt" option is the most modern and corresponds to that on current iPhones. The battery is initially only charged to 80 percent overnight, then the remaining energy boost to 100 percent battery capacity follows shortly before waking up. Last but not least, there is still the conventional option, which, according to the leak, stops charging at 80 percent battery capacity.

This option for purists will apparently be called "Max Protection" in the future. One UI 6.1 will be released together with the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra in January 2024. Still, experience shows that it will then also be available for older Galaxy phones, such as the Galaxy S23-Series (available here on Amazon) or the Galaxy S22-Family from 2022.
