A new leak says the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be codenamed "sun". It will launch with an 8-core Soc with two large and six medium CPU cores.

A recent report confirmed that TSMC would exclusively manufacture next year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Before that, a rumour speculated its Nuvia cores would offer up to a 40% performance uplift over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Its core configuration and codenames have now been revealed. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 (SM8750) is codenamed "Pakala", continuing the trend of using Hawaiian city names for their flagship SoCs.

Its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, was codenamed Lanai. On the software end, it will be codenamed "Sun" (Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was Pineapple). This is how the chip will differentiate itself from its predecessors on benchmarking platforms like Geekbench. On the hardware side, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will ditch Arm Cortex cores and replace them with 2x Nuvia Phoenix L and 6x Nuvia Phoenix M cores, effectively confirming a leak from earlier this year.

Precisely what the "L" and "M" denote are unclear, but it'd be reasonable to assume they stand for "large" and "medium", respectively. It follows the MediaTek Dimensity 9300's footsteps by eliminating low-power efficiency cores. One can only hope Qualcomm keeps thermals in check; otherwise, the "sun" codename could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
