Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 rumoured to launch with LPDDR6 memory
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC has a lot riding on it, primarily because it will be the first mobile AP to run Qualcomm's in-house Nuvia cores. A South Korean news outlet Ajunews says it might be one of the first mobile SoCs to launch with LPDDR6 memory.
However, the report also speculates that there might not be enough time to mass-produce LPDDR6 module and that they could debut in 2025. It will reportedly be hastened to keep up with demands for on-device generative AI features. Qualcomm already confirmed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will launch in October.
JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) plans to unveil LPDDR6 sometime in September, five years after the LPDDR5 standard was announced. With GDDR7 already out of the door, it is only a matter of time before LPDDR6 follows suit.
ETNews reports that LPDDR6 standards are close to being finalized. While its actual specs are still unknown, Samsung talked about them back in 2021 (H/T ComputerBase). First-generation LPDDR6 modules could offer transfer speeds up to 12,800 MT/s, which can be pushed to 17,000 MT/s with overclocking.
