Laptops in Apple’s MacBook Pro series are some of the best machines on the market for professionals who need a lot of horsepower. Equipped with Apple’s in-house M-series SoCs, the MacBook Pro machines boast a rare combination of performance, efficiency, build quality, and, in the smaller 14-inch version, portability.
So, if you need lots of performance and great battery life in a travel-friendly chassis, the MacBook Pro 14 is the way to go.
To that end, the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (2023) is now on sale for $2,399 at Best Buy. This is a $700 discount vs the laptop’s $3,099 list price (linked at the end). While this is quite a bit of cash for a machine that was launched back in 2023, the notebook doesn't compromise on the internals.
Under the hood, the MacBook Pro 14 (2023) is powered by an M3 Max SoC, 36 GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage, and a 72.6 Wh battery. On the outside, the laptop carries a 14.2-inch Mini-LED IPS display with a 3,024 x 1,964 resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate.
For ports, Apple only offers:
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports
- One HDMI 2.1 out
- A MagSafe connector
- A 3.5 mm headphone jack
- An SD-card reader
Sadly, there are no Type-A ports. So, if you need a Type-A connector, you’ll need a Type-C USB dock.
Apple MacBook Pro 14 M3 Max is nearly flawless
We comprehensively reviewed both the 16-inch and the 14-inch versions of the MacBook Pro 14 (2023). Our 14-inch review device, which was equipped with a faster M3 Max with 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores, impressed us in almost every way. As a result, the laptop earned a “very good” rating of 93%.
The highlights of the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (2023) are the sturdy Aluminum chassis, outstanding trackpad, fast performance, and excellent display. In our testing, the 14.2-inch panel featured 600 nits of average brightness, practically infinite contrast, 99% DCI-P3 coverage, and accurate colors out of the box.
As for performance, the 14-core M3 Max, while noticeably slower than the 16-core variant, is plenty capable. It matches x86 chips like the AMD Ryzen AI Max 390 and Core i9-13980HX in multi-core performance. The single-core performance is also quite good, as the M3 Max can go toe to toe with chips like the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.
In addition to the impressive CPU, the Apple M3 Max also carries a powerful GPU. The 30-core GPU inside the MacBook Pro 14 on sale can be used to accelerate both content creation work and gaming. The latter is quite exciting as games natively playable on macOS are steadily increasing in number.
Finally, the MacBook Pro 14 M3 Max also boasts long battery life. Our WLAN testing at 150 nits showed that the machine can last more than 15 hours on a single charge.
