Mark Gurman has shed new light on the state of Apple's upcoming MacBook Pro releases. To recap, all but the M2 generation of devices has arrived annually between October and November since Apple adopted in-house silicon in 2020. By contrast, Apple offered the 13-inch variant in June 2022, with 14-inch and 16-inch equivalents following in January 2023.
In a new post on Bloomberg, Gurman now suggests that Apple may pull a similar move for its M5 generation of Pro-branded MacBooks, as we have outlined separately. While the analyst has not shared specifics, he believes that Apple is 'now internally targeting a launch early next year', albeit with the caveat that 'the timing remains fluid' at this stage.
At this stage, Gurman asserts that the delayed release of M5 MacBook Pro models will not impact when Apple introduces equivalent MacBook Air refreshes. Instead, the analyst reports that Apple has settled on a particularly busy launch schedule for the first half of 2026, full details of which we have covered separately.
Currently, the next 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro are expected to line up with the same design as their current M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max-powered predecessors (curr. $2,847 on Amazon). By contrast, the successors to these forthcoming models, codenamed J714 and J716, are anticipated to combine M6 generation chipsets with OLED displays and the first new designs since 2020.
In MacRumors' view, pushing M5 generation machines to early 2026 makes the release of M6 successors in the same year unlikely. Apple did just that with its M2 and M3 generation machines though, which resulted in a nine-month shelf life for M2-powered MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 models. Consequently, we would not rule out two generations of MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 releases just yet, although more recent performance suggests that Apple will not be indulging in multiple MacBook Pro releases during th
