The M1 MacBook Air is known for its long battery life, but it may be more famous for its long sales lifespan.
The popular 2020 laptop from Apple can still be found new at Walmart, and it can now be found for a lower price. Walmart dropped the price for new M1 MacBook Airs to $599, a $50 reduction from its prior price. Walmart started selling new M1 MacBook Airs for $699 in March of last year before dropping the price to $649 in July. This price was for the base model Air with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD.
While it is getting on in years, the M1 chip still keeps up with most tasks demanded by general consumers, such as web browsing, video streaming, and office work. It also offers outstanding battery life, which some consumers find to be the most important factor in a laptop.
In our review of the M1 MacBook Air, the laptop scored a 91%. Its highlights include its 15+ hour battery life in our testing, efficient and cool performance, and fanless design. However, its webcam leaves a lot to be desired, and its design is getting long in the tooth.
Interested buyers should also be aware that while the M1 MacBook Air is compatible with MacOS Tahoe (aka MacOS 26), it may not be supported by Apple's newer operating systems in the next couple of years.
While $599 is a competitive price considering the laptop's specs, the M1 MacBook Air can often be found cheaper via deals through sites like Woot or through various refurbishers. Walmart's MacBook Airs are brand new, meaning they will have fully functional batteries and are covered by a full-year warranty. Additionally, retailers regularly sell the latest M4 MacBook Air (curr. available at Amazon for $799) for a significant discount, coming in only $200-250 more than the M1 Air.
Lastly, Apple is rumored to drop a cheaper version of the MacBook Air sporting its A18 mobile chip and the newer MacBook Air design. While this alleged "budget" MacBook Air is still rumored, it is speculated to retail for between $599 and $699. However, it may lack some features of even the M1 MacBook Air; Thunderbolt support may be omitted from the A18 MacBook Air, if rumors are to be believed.
You can purchase the M1 MacBook Air new from Walmart for $599.
