Subnautica: Below Zero reviews and gameplay highlights
Subnautica: Below Zero is a survival-craft game that launched shortly after Subnautica took the gaming world by storm. It more or less set the standard for what a story-driven open-world survival game should be, offering all of the typical survival, crafting, exploration, and narrative elements we've come to expect from the genre, all with an intense cosmic horror twist.
Subnautica: Below Zero shares many of the same characteristics that made the original game great — a vast open world, expansive survival and crafting mechanics, and an almost unprecedented degree of freedom to explore the oceans and play the game your way. The game again places you in the shoes of a scientist on an alien planet covered in water, except this time you're in a frozen wasteland, and you're there in secret. Your mission is to explore the icy waters below and uncover the mystery of your sister's death and why it was covered up by the company she worked for, but things quickly change as you realise the scope of what you're walking into.
Below Zero also has fairly moderate system requirements, making it a great game to play on devices like the Lenovo Legion Go S (curr. $649.99 on Amazon).
In terms of reviews, Steam currently rates Subnautica: Below Zero as "Very Positive," thanks to a 90% positive review tally. This rating comes from a total of nearly 90,000 reviews, making the review score even more impressive. Most of the reviews praise Below Zero for its in-depth exploration and crafting, the design of its vast open world, and the challenging gameplay loop.
Despite the continued work on Subnautica 2 and the legal issues plaguing that game, the developer has continued to push updates for Below Zero, with the latest one landing as recently as August 12.
