Reviews for the Apple MacBook Pro 14 2023 M3 Max
Apple puts its new high-end chip M3 Max into the compact MacBook Pro 14 and the result is the fastest 14-inch laptop you can buy in terms of CPU performance. However, this is also a big challenge for the cooling and the performance is not completely stable.

For well over 15 years, I’ve believed in the Mac. I know, I sound like the first scene in The Godfather, but hear me out.. Bought my first MacBook Pro in 2009 when I decided to do YouTube seriously. Upgraded in 2012 when the Retina Display was just irresistible. That particular model was so good, that it helped me edit nearly 1800 videos over the next five years. That said, I’ll admit I did fully commit to a switch after Microsoft reached out to get me to try a Dell that was double the price, along with Premiere Pro, but that didn’t last. Even with so much horse power, and all the granularity in the Adobe Creative Suite, I showed them that I could edit the same video in half the time on a five-year-old Mac with Final Cut Pro.

From the upgraded graphics power to the ability to run at full speed when unplugged to the excellent 120Hz display that goes up 1,600 nits of brightness to the new Space Black color option, the MacBook Pro (M3 Max) and the other laptops in the new lineup have delivered more breakthrough speed and power to professionals who need the highest levels of performance to build the next-generation of AI and AR/VR experiences.

Now, obviously, I only have access to performance numbers for the M3 Max. And in the unit I’m seeing, performance is pretty killer. If you’re for that top-end model, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The M3 Pro and M3 configurations, however, are a different story. We already know for sure that the M3 Pro has both reduced memory bandwidth and fewer performance cores than the M2 Pro. That certainly doesn’t sound good. But until performance is tested firsthand though, we won’t know for sure how those will affect overall performance. All I know is that the M3 Max model is a huge jump over the M2 Max in terms of GPU performance. That won’t make it a must-buy for everyone coming from earlier models (especially if you can get the M2 Max for cheap), but I’m happy to see Apple continue to push the envelope on these high-end machines.

What's there left to say in the end, apart from "Beautiful. Insane.", as Apple itself calls the current MacBook Pro generation? "Beautiful." The MacBook Pro certainly is that, and it's simply wonderful to work with in everyday life. However, if this everyday life doesn't constantly consist of 8K videos and rendering projects that have to be completed on the go, then it's "insane" to spend so much money on the insane performance. Unless, of course, you simply love technology and want to purr along with that "I could if I wanted to" feeling of high-powered cars. For everyone else, the lower-powered M3 and M3 Pro models from $1,599 make much more sense. For those models, you will also get brute computing power, the same great chassis including the touchpad and keyboard as well as the famous display without running the risk of being bankrupt.

The all-new MacBook Pro has everything that a power user would need for everyday tasks — a high-end desktop-grade performance, outstanding battery life, a best-in-class display in this size, and, to top it off, solid looks. The sheer raw power that M3 Max features makes it ideal for AI developers, 3D artists, gamers, and video content professionals. Anyone not falling in that category can either go M3 Pro if they have the budget or choose an M3 — if the everyday tasks don't require intensive workflows. During the review, we realised that the MacBook Pro with M3 Max is great for working with demanding content across a variety of workflows, such as making intricate 3D models and SketchUp faster than before. The bottom line is if you're looking for a laptop with multitasking, minor video edits, and casual gaming as the top priority, then the M3 chip-powered MacBook Pro with 8GB unified memory should be good, and it starts at Rs. 1,69,900.

There are more options than ever for Apple’s longstanding Pro laptop this year. The lower starting price is most welcome, although it is still not cheap at £1,699 and comes with a chip that while tremendously fast, may not be powerful enough for professional work and only 8GB of memory. That makes the base model difficult to recommend over the excellent MacBook Air for Apple users. Not so for the M3 Pro and Max models, which are yet again a remarkable combination of power and efficiency that no other manufacturer can touch. Here Apple continues to go from strength to strength. The 14in size remains the sweet spot in laptops, which is helped by a stunning screen, best-in-class trackpad and keyboard, and a solid selection of ports. It’s not cheap but if you don’t specifically need Windows 11, it is one of the very best working laptops you can buy. And it looks pretty great in black.

If someone took a Mac Pro and ran it over with a steamroller, it wouldn’t work. Obviously. But the MacBook Pro with M3 Max does feel a lot like a flat Mac Pro you can sling in a bag. For anyone considering upgrading from a powerful Intel unit, they’ll be floored by the improvements in raw power – and also by other features, such as the display and design. That decision is less clear cut when upgrading from Apple Silicon machines. Even with an M1 Max, you can probably wait another year, unless you’ve deep pockets and/or a never-ending desire for the latest and greatest kit. And if you’re still unsure whether this is the Mac for you, ask yourself if you need all that power – or just want to show off. If not, an M3 Pro or even an M3 might be enough. But if so, this is the best Apple has to offer in a portable form factor – and even gives the company’s most powerful desktops a run for their money.

Which M3 Macbook Pro should you get? I invested in a Maxed out M3 Max Macbook pro but is that right for you? Is the M3 Pro Macbook Pro really that bad? And is the base model M3 Macbook Pro enough? Let's talk!

If you don't immediately fall in love with the new Space Black finish then it doesn't even matter – because Apple's 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 is such a powerful and accomplished machine that you'll be simply engulfed by its peerless capability. In M3 Max configuration this is a desktop PC but in laptop form. Plus, with the 13-inch MacBook Pro now dead and buried, a 15-inch MacBook Air for more casual use-cases, the MacBook Pro has rightfully earned its place and is at the top of its game.

If you want to see how wild Apple’s prices can get, just look at the 16-inch MacBook Pro I received, which clocks in at $7,199 with the full-powered M3 Max (16-core CPU, 40-core GPU) 128GB of RAM and that 8TB SSD. It's not something an average consumer would buy — but it would definitely be useful for Disney to have a pile of them on-hand to help editors and VFX artists pump out the latest Marvel show. Funny enough, my advice today echoes what I said last year: Don't buy the cheapest model. Beyond that, it's hard to go wrong. The M3 chips are incredibly efficient and powerful. And Apple's MacBook Pro design remains as elegant as ever. Just try to save up for at least 16GB of RAM.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch (M3 Max, 2023) is dark (if you opt for the new Space Black finish), brooding, powerful, and has the raw power and performance to excite professionals and gamers, alike – this is a MacBook Pro that finally and proudly declares, "I'm a gaming laptop, and what of it?" It also has the design and light weight to appeal to students and creators who demand portable power and are willing to pay for it. If you want the fastest laptop Apple has ever produced, and one that rivals the speed of any Windows system, look no further.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

Apple is one of the most valuable companies in the world and has a loyal following of customers and fans. The company also has a strong presence in the entertainment industry, with services like Apple Music and Apple TV+. In 2023, Apple had an approximate 8% market share of global PC sales, ranking it 4th after Lenovo, HP, and Dell.
