Pros
Cons
The Apple iPhone Duo marks the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone market. It features a 7.6-inch OLED main display, a 5.4-inch cover screen, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Apple equips the device with an A20 Pro processor, 12 GB of memory, up to 2 TB of storage, and iOS 27. Its camera system combines two 40 MP rear sensors with a 12 MP front camera. Early reviewers highlight its thoughtful design, familiar software, capable performance, and potentially subtle display crease. However, its substantial price, 254-gram weight, uncertain durability, and strong competition remain important concerns.

Apple's folding phone is finally (well, almost) here. The phone goes up for preorder on Oct. 16 and reaches stores on Oct. 23. That means you have until then to decide if the iPhone Duo is the right phone for you or if you should settle for the yearly refresh of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

The iPhone Duo feels like a refresh in the iPhone lineup that has been waiting for a foldable for years. The hardware, from the sturdy hinge to the nano-texture glass, sets a remarkably high baseline.

So, does eight generations make a difference? Yes, but it may not matter because Apple is entering the market after years of observing what worked in the market, and what didn’t. It also does not need to persuade existing iPhone users that foldables are useful from scratch.

Based on my limited time checking out the iPhone Duo, I can say that for me, the takeaway is how Apple is using the device’s form factor and folding capabilities to elevate the user experience via the UI. The Netflix app, the multitasking features, the little things that help make Standby so useful and interesting, even small things like the folding animation, all combine to make it a compelling device.

The iPhone Duo feels like a huge release for Apple. It’s not for everyone, and I have no doubt that some people will rush into buying it in a fit of excitement only to realise, a couple of months down the line, that it really isn’t for them. That’s what excites me, though.

I was mostly indifferent about the possibility of a foldable iPhone, especially as someone who’s been testing Android foldables for years, but based on my hands-on time so far, Apple seems to be doing a nice job making the whole experience both familiar for iPhone users and distinct from the swath of foldable options already out there.

As for my reading-device dilemma: the iPad Mini is still the more obvious answer – compact, purpose-built, and rumoured to get a refresh as soon as October, weeks after the iPhone Duo ships. I’ll wait before deciding

So, two very different devices. Apple leaned heavily into the multimedia machine that's also extra smart. That's why it chose a wide screen, and it talked it up quite a lot during the presentation. Google, on the other hand, is on the main quest of making the smartest smartphone it can. Even if it can't crush 3D games.

We’ve lived in a world where you can fold your phone in half for a half-decade now – and frankly, I expected Apple to jump into the fray much sooner. But this is a company that likes to wait until it has something new to offer, and the iPhone Duo has a lot to add to the conversation.

There are people who have been waiting years for Apple to join the foldable fray, and in that sense, the iPhone Duo already feels like a safer bet than last year’s iPhone Air. And to Apple’s credit, it isn’t treating the Duo like an open goal – there’s thoughtful design here, and the software approach in particular is sure to reward fans’ patience.

Samsung has been in the foldable game from the beginning. It pretty much wrote the foldable book with its Fold series, which reached its eighth and best iteration recently with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. However, one thing it has seemed weirdly unwilling – or perhaps unable – to do is to properly implement its S Pen stylus system.

I’m not calling this the best foldable yet without further testing, but I’m definitely keeping an eye on this one. And for that price tag, it has to be top-notch. The iPhone Duo starts at C$2,999, making it the most expensive smartphone in the Canadian market, so it better be pretty stellar.

This year, it's foldable season for both Samsung and Apple. The iPhone Duo is a first-gen device, but it is already a pretty mature-looking foldable that seemingly does a lot of essentials excellently.

Apple A20 Pro 7-core GPU: A graphics processor integrated into Apple's A20 Pro SoCs. Early data indicates there are no architectural A19 Pro 6-core GPU from 2025, but there is now one computational cluster (core) more, and clock speeds may have received a slight increase as well.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

A20 Pro: Apple's powerful new SoC found inside its H2 2026 iPhones and possibly iPads. Made with an unspecified "2 nm" process, it features 2 high-performance and and 4 power-saving CPU cores running at higher clock speeds than what the A19 Pro could muster. The built-in NPU, as well as the iGPU are now both larger and faster.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
