Code leak hints at Apple iPhone with multiple batteries

The sheer number of rumors and leaks surrounding the Apple iPhone Ultra leaves little doubt that Apple’s first foldable smartphone will be officially unveiled in September. Now, Macworld has uncovered further clues in the code of the latest beta version of iOS 27 that point to an iPhone with a foldable display.

Apple has added the following lines of text to the battery status section in System Settings: "The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected" and "The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded." In both cases, the term "batteries" is used in the plural. Until now, these messages have always been phrased in the singular, as iPhones have always been equipped with only one battery. However, that is set to change with the iPhone Ultra, as rumors suggest Apple will install one battery in each half of the device – a design common among competitors’ foldable smartphones.

According to rumors, one of these batteries has a capacity of 1,921 mAh, while the other has a capacity of 2,962 mAh, bringing the iPhone Ultra’s total capacity to 4,883 mAh. Despite its more compact design, the battery would thus be 483 mAh, or 11 percent, larger than that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 ($1,219 on Amazon). The iPhone Ultra is expected to be officially unveiled at a launch event in September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the next-generation Apple Watch. The foldable is said to feature a 5.49-inch secondary display, a 7.76-inch main display, a 48 MP main camera, and a 48 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, but will not include a telephoto camera.
