The first Apple iPhone with a foldable display will finally be officially unveiled in September. Apple is said to have developed a more compact version of the Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra, which attaches magnetically to the smartphone and can be charged this way. However, it is unlikely that this stylus will be released alongside the iPhone Ultra.

The Apple iPhone Ultra is expected to be officially unveiled on Wednesday, September 9. A new report from Bloomberg now suggests that Apple has developed a special version of the Apple Pencil ($69 on Amazon) intended for the first iPhone with a foldable display. This version of the stylus is said to be slightly shorter, to match the more compact form factor of the iPhone Ultra.

Just as with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil Pro, this stylus is said to attach magnetically to the iPhone Ultra’s metal frame, where it will also charge. This simplifies transport and eliminates the need to pack an additional charger for the Apple Pencil. However, the Bloomberg report points out that the surface of foldable displays isn’t as hard as that of conventional displays, which means a stylus could leave scratches on the screen.

This is likely one of the reasons why Bloomberg considers it unlikely that Apple will actually release this Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra. However, since the company has already developed a prototype, it’s conceivable that the Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra will be released at a later date or alongside the second-generation iPhone Ultra. According to rumors, the Apple iPhone Ultra will feature an Apple A20 Pro ARM chip, a 5.49-inch secondary display, a foldable 7.76-inch main display, a 48 MP main camera, a 48 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a battery with a capacity of approximately 5,800 mAh.
