Apple Watch 12 and Ultra 4 said to get sensor upgrade ahead of redesign in 2027

Apple recently sent out invitations to a launch event taking place on Wednesday, September 9. In addition to the Apple iPhone 18 Pro (Max) and the iPhone Ultra, the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 are also expected to be unveiled at this event. Bloomberg has now uncovered some new details about the updates to both smartwatches.

According to the report, Apple is not only set to include a more powerful processor for the first time since the Apple Watch Series 9, but is also planning a sensor upgrade, as Apple is reportedly testing a heart rate sensor that is active around the clock and collects data, similar to what is found in the Polar Loop ($199 on Amazon). Currently, the sensor is activated only sporadically to conserve battery life, data is collected continuously only during an active workout. This should enable the Apple Watch, among other things, to calculate calories burned more accurately.

Both the Apple Fitness and Apple Health iPhone apps are set to be revamped to display more wellness metrics in the style of Oura and Whoop. Another new feature is that the Apple Watch Series 12 is expected to be offered optionally with a ceramic case, with Apple reportedly testing versions in white and dark gray. According to Bloomberg, however, a completely redesigned model isn’t expected until 2027; aside from the new material option and new band colors, the look of the Apple Watch Series 12 is unlikely to change much.
