Reviews for the Apple MacBook Pro 16 2024 M4 Pro
The large MacBook Pro 16 can better make use of the new Apple M4 Pro SoC's performance potential compared to the smaller MacBook Pro 14—plus, its battery life is even better. Again, its optional matte panel proves to be a real advantage if you often find yourself working in bright environments.

Thanks to its more punchy hardware, the MacBook Pro 16″ (M4 Pro / M4 Max) offers more performance than the base version of the 14-inch sibling. In real life, you can spot this if you are using the machine for 3D rendering, video conversion, compression, decompression, etc. If you don’t care about the performance of these types of loads, both devices feel equally snappy during daily usage. Still, the 16-incher boasts slightly better comfort. The fans are a bit quieter during heavy CPU stress. It took 75 seconds before hearing any noise while Cinebench R23 was running in the background. The 16.2-inch display of our laptop is tied with the optional matte Nano-texture coating. The latter makes the panel a great choice for people who work in a well-lit environment. The screen offers 100% Display P3 coverage and 613 nits of max brightness when it’s not under direct sunlight.

The 2024 MacBook Pro M4 Pro 16" is a powerful laptop for any use case, from modelling to animating and rendering, as well as daily computing tasks. The portability and excellent battery life makes it suitable for 3D artists on the move too, so should be near the top of your shortlist and could even replace a desktop workstation for many users.

The new Macbook Pro M4 might be the best laptop ever created for productivity and content creation. From the M4 battery life to overall performance it might be one of the most impressive architectures available right now. And versus the best Windows laptops...it isn't even close in the applications that matter. And when you talk about the Apple M4 vs M4 Pro vs M4 Max, its hard to see how any Windows laptop with AMD and Intel CPUs could beat it.

The MacBook Pro 16-inch M4 Pro is an excellent laptop thanks to its vivid display, sensible design, fast performance, comfortable keyboard and epic battery life. While it’s more expensive than the entry-level MacBook Pro and not as powerful as its M4 Max counterpart, you likely won’t feel cheated thanks to everything it offers. The usefulness of Apple Intelligence is still up in the air. Where extended battery life and a large display benefit everyone, you might not use Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools or the upcoming Image Playground. I won’t completely dismiss Apple Intelligence (or machine learning), but right now, I don’t see it as a selling point for most people—at least not yet. Even if the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 or 16-inch MacBook Pro M4 Max are more compelling options in terms of price and performance (respectively), I’d still recommend the MacBook Pro 16-inch M4 Pro to anyone who wants a dependable 16-inch MacBook that delivers plenty of power and battery life.

Since 16-inch, M4 Pro (and M4 Max) MacBook Pros are big investments there’s a tendency to hold on to them longer than an M4 MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air. If you bought an M3 Pro MacBook Pro (or maybe even an M2 Pro), you’re probably good with waiting until the next cycle, which will carry over the changes here and add some new goodies. The M4 Pro offers the typical boost that comes with a new chip, which may not be enough to justify the cost on its own. However, the new Thunderbolt 5 implementation is a landmark upgrade that will add new efficiency to workflows of massive data transfers. You need the appropriate cables and devices to take advantage of the throughput, but perhaps for you, that’s just the cost of doing business and Thunderbolt 5 is enough to make you get an M4 Pro or Max MacBook Pro.

First and foremost, the latest MacBook Pro challenges some of the most competitive laptops without even making the mighty leap to M4 Max. That alone makes it worthy of an Editors’ Choice award for high-end mobile workstations. We also deeply appreciate the nano-texture display, but again, this is the sort of option that should be included in the product cost—not a $150 add-on. Our only other quibble with the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the specific configuration we received, which is $150 more expensive than it costs to get the base-model M4 Max version ($3,499). Our M4 Pro setup focuses on bigger stockpiles of memory and storage instead of fast-tracking to the superior chip.

The new MacBook Pro 16-inch is more powerful than ever thanks to the new M4 Pro (which we test here) and M4 Max chips, providing the level of performance that creative professionals require - and then some. While the lack of a new design might disappoint some people, a few quiet tweaks under the hood, including Thunderbolt 5 support, an improved webcam and new optional nano-texture screen all make this the best MacBook Apple has ever made - but it's still a laptop that's not for everyone.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro has been one of our favorites for the last few years now, but Apple has outdone itself with the base M4 Pro model this year. While $2,499 is a lofty starting price, this is the first year I can comfortably say that even the most demanding users will be well served by that configuration without any upgrades. The entire package is remarkable, with unmatched performance, class-leading battery life, one of the brightest displays we've tested, excellent speakers, and a shockingly good webcam. Again, I still wouldn't recommend it for dedicated gamers, but if you are like me and just dip your toe into gaming occasionally, the M4 Pro has you more than covered, even if you are after modern AAA titles. Unless Windows is a must for you or your budget is $2,000 or less (in which case, let me introduce you to the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4), if you are a demanding power user or content creator, the 16-inch MacBook Pro M4 Pro is an easy recommendation.

The 16-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro didn't come to play. With jaw-dropping performance, impressive battery life, and a gorgeous nano-texture display option, this laptop is geared for professionals who need powerhouse specs and are willing to pay for them. If you’re a video editor, a 3D designer, or someone who needs serious firepower, this MacBook is as good as it gets. Even if you're just an internet surfer and a Netflix browser, get it for the 20-hour+ battery life — if you have the money to blow, of course. Either way, the M4 Pro is a future-proof machine that won’t leave you disappointed, as long as you’ve got the budget for it.

I’m not saying Mac devotees should necessarily tear their gaze away from theM4 MacBook Pro range. These laptops will be faster than ever, have better battery life than before and will still be the best machines for heavy duty creative workloads. But for anyone who just wants a fast, reliable laptop that lasts for ages – the price may be too high and the standard specification too low to justify continuing to splash out.

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
