The iPhone 17 Pro Max makes a controversial switch to aluminum, which helped keep the weight in check and perhaps maintains adequate sustained performance, but it also hurt the durability by making the iPhone more prone to scratches. Then there is the mix of glass and metal on the back, which combined with the new color options, make this iPhone one of the less likable in recent memory. The display of the 17 Pro Max gained cool new anti-glare finish, but its cutout is still the same unsightly mess. It is a great screen, yes, but we have seen it a couple of times already.We do appreciate the improved battery life and charging speeds, even if it requires the new charger with absurd name and its AVS charging protocol.

It is the fastest and coolest ultra premium phone in the market, with one of the best displays, arguably the best set of speakers, and with an impressive camera system that does more than what any other phone offers. The software — iOS 26 — is as good a version of iOS as any, and in most instances better than what Android phone companies put in their devices. It’s missing the AI smarts that have started appearing in Google Android, but on user experience the impact is almost none. Not yet. So, the only reason why I might say that hold on to your wallet before you pay Rs 1,49,900 or Rs 1,34,900 for the iPhone 17 Pro is the iPhone 17.

This is the iPhone for people who would take advantage of a bigger screen, extra battery life, and a telephoto lens. If you go to concerts and don’t get tickets down the front, this is for you. However, if you are still happy with your iPhone 14 Pro Max or newer, this isn’t an essential year to upgrade. There are a lot of benefits to upgrading this year, but if you’re still being served by your current phone, it won’t be life-changing. Even the 13 Pro Max is a borderline case, though more on the side of upgrading for those who would like to. Anything older than an iPhone 11 isn’t eligible for the upgrade to iOS 26, so an upgrade for you is more essential. The iPhone 12 generation would benefit enormously, though there’s still another year of iOS updates to be enjoyed.

One thing that I appreciate is that Apple gave the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max personality. Gone is the minimal design for the sake of being simple. Now, we have an old punk rocker who put on a black leather jacket for the first time in years. This redesign will not appeal to everyone. But ultimately, whether you upgrade to the iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max comes down to many of the similar considerations of prior Pro models. Is your current phone on its last legs? Can you get a great deal on the new Pro iPhones? And will the battery get through a day for you? Even if you don't choose a 17 Pro in the highly visible orange option, getting a phone that solves those problems is punk, too.

The iPhone 17 Pro is also great, though, if you prefer a design that’s more compact. I would personally not upgrade if you have an iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple A19 Pro 6-Core GPU: A fast integrated graphics card with which the Apple A19 SoC is equipped. This iGPU has 6 cores and is capable of ray tracing.
