Reviews for the Apple MacBook Air 15 M4
Apple has given its MacBook Air 15 the lightning-fast M4 SoC, which is still cooled passively. It also features a new 12 MP webcam and a new colorway. However, its 60 Hz display remains unchanged and there is no matte option—but the Air is now $100 cheaper.

The MacBook Air M4 is still one of the most complete packages you can ask for when it comes to creativity, productivity, and everyday use. The M4 Air's sleek and lightweight form factor set the standard for ultraportables, and not much has changed with its design since, for better or for worse. If you have an iPhone and enjoy Apple's ecosystem of products, the MacBook Air is a solid choice as a main driver. If you already have a Mac that's more than a few years old, the MacBook Air M4 will feel like a significant upgrade. If you have an M2 Pro or M3, the leap will feel less noticeable. If you're coming from an older Windows device, well, you'll wonder how you ever took calls on your 720p webcam at all. Considering all of this, the MacBook Air M4 is a modest upgrade from its predecessor but pushes the line forward overall.

The MacBook Air continues to impress – and this bump in performance, thanks to the M4 chip, makes it an unbelievably powerful option in both sizes. For portability, the 13-inch is still my choice, but if you do want a larger screen, the 15-inch is still impressively thin and lightweight, making it easy to slip into your bag. On paper, the screen brightness and performance of the MacBook Air suggests a big step down from the MacBook Pro – but I found the screen to still be very impressive. So, unless that extra brightness and refresh rate are critical for your work, you won’t feel short-changed. Overall, the MacBook Air M4 offers both power and portability unlike anything else in the market. While little has changed generation to generation, the Air remains a shining example of a laptop done right.

Most laptop shoppers kicking the tires on the 15-inch MacBook Air are also eyeing, I'd imagine, the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air. The MacBook Air is an excellent laptop in either size, so how do you decide which way to go? The 13-inch model costs $200 less and is roughly half a pound lighter, making it more affordable and portable -- and the more popular of the two. But I'd argue the 15-inch Air is the better pick for most people since most people don't use their MacBook connected to an external display. The 15.3-inch display on the larger Air provides enough workspace to obviate the need for a multidisplay setup -- even if the M4 Airs do offer better support for external displays.

Mark's MacBook Air M4 review is here, and although it's not the biggest upgrade, Apple reminds us all why the MacBook Air is the best laptop for a lot of people.

The latest MacBook Air 15-inch (M4) offers cutting-edge Apple silicon, with some great features, a brilliant thin and light design and some of the best speakers you'll find in a laptop. However, if you already own an M2 or M3 MacBook Air, you might not feel like the performance leap the M4 chip offers is big enough to justify buying the new MacBook Air.

PC laptops really have moved leaps and bounds in the past year or so, thanks to the rise of “AI PC” chips from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm. These are closing the gap with Apple’s silicon, and they finally offer decent performance at much greater energy efficiency. However, while good, the new M4 chip shows that few can compete with the MacBook Air’s outstanding combination of design, capability and quality. When it’s all said and done, what I value the most about the 15in MacBook Air is its amazing ‘unplugged’ processing power while still delivering 8+ hour battery life, the large 15.3-inch screen, the quiet, fan-less operation and lovely, sleek design.

The MacBook Air 15-inch M4 isn’t all that different from its predecessor but it’s still excellent for anyone interested in a larger Air laptop. I like its fast performance, long battery life and superb display quality most of all, but I also appreciate the updated 12MP camera and new Sky Blue color. And with a sticker price that’s $100 less than the M3 model, this laptop is almost too good to be true. That said, if you own the M3 model, you don’t need to upgrade since that’s still a brilliant machine that can do almost anything the new version can—including all the same Apple Intelligence features. In short, you’re not missing much by not upgrading. Though I would recommend the $999 13-inch MacBook Air M4 for most people, its 15-inch sibling is easily my second recommendation. It’s one of my favorite laptops of the year so far.

The MacBook Air M4 clearly takes things on a step from the M3, with various small improvements combined with that lower starting price. And as such, it can’t really be argued with as a potential purchase (unless you can pick up an M3 at a low price before that completely disappears). While Intel, AMD and Snapdragon Windows ultraportables are improving all the time, they can’t quite match the performance and battery life on show here. Although it can’t quite beat the step up that we saw with the M2 in 2022, it shows that Apple is determined to keep ahead of its rivals on performance.

On the whole, this is the best the 15-inch MacBook Air has ever been. For the deep-pocketed Apple loyalist, who may have an M3 Air, this model will feel improved enough to justify grabbing one for that fancy new colorway and improved webcam. However, for M3 owners who don’t have that kind of dough to throw around, wait until the eventual M5 model before you upgrade. Even if you have an original 15-inch Air, you might think twice before clicking that buy button and hold out hope for a more profound redesign in 2026. Why? Based on our testing, comparable PC laptops in 2025 now challenge the 15-inch Air. We suspect this is part of why Apple dropped the starting price by $100, and with its midrange to high-end configurations, by several hundred.

The MacBook Air 15 is about as near to perfect as it can be without quite making it. It’s incredibly well built, it’s insanely thin and light but doesn’t feel flimsy, and it looks great. It’s fast enough for the most demanding productivity users, and it has multi-day battery life. It’s also reasonably affordable, although it remains a premium laptop. The base configuration at $1,299 is all most people will need, and it offers up plenty of performance. Unless you’re a gamer or heavy-duty creator — both of which can be important in larger machines like this — or you really need Windows, you should just grab a MacBook Air 15 and save yourself a bunch of time.

The M4 MacBook Air is a the newest in Apple's most popular and most mainstream laptop and it is essentially review-proof, because this will be a top seller for existing MacBook users regardless of how much or how little it has improved over the barely 12-month old M3 MacBook Air.

The MacBook Air 15-inch M4 is a fairly unique laptop, delivering a larger screen in what is basically a 14-inch chassis, but it has far more than that to offer. The M4 chip brings the Air back among the top-performing mainstream premium laptops while offering over 15 hours of battery life. The bright display makes it ideal for frequent travelers or anyone who is often working in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. That combination along with its reasonable pricing makes this one of the best student laptops. While I would like to see Apple upgrade the display on the MacBook Air, that's more of a wish than a serious complaint as it is a good LCD panel. The limited ports are my biggest frustration with the 15-inch Air, and I'd concede it isn't a concern that will bother many users.

Once again, the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air are basically everything we want from ultraportable notebooks. They’re zippy, wonderfully light and can last well beyond a full day of work. While the M4 chip isn’t a transformative upgrade, it helps Apple keep pace with evolving PC notebook chips. And now that the MacBook Air starts at $999, even Windows users should consider making the jump.

Apple’s MacBook Air 15 is simply the most powerful and elegant ultraportable available. With a larger screen, faster processor and now, in a sharper colour, it’s the most beautiful and best MacBook for everyday users on the go.

In my M3 MacBook Air review last year, I said it was “the best laptop choice for just about anyone.” With the M4 MacBook Air, that holds, but this laptop is better. The M3 Air’s clamshell compromise with the external display support was a deal killer for a lot of users. So, the M4 Air’s expanded external display support is a more important upgrade than the performance improvements. Don’t get me wrong, though–faster is always better. The 12MP Center Stage camera is an overdue upgrade that makes Apple’s general consumer laptop feel more professional. It’s also cheaper by $100 across the board. The model we tested that sells for $1,399 would have been $1,499 for the same specs with an M3 chip. That’s a nice and surprising discount, especially considering you get twice the RAM you got when the M3 launched in March 2024.

Maybe. The MacBook Air with M4 is a sleek laptop powerful enough for many light and medium-duty photo workflows and very light video ones. However, it comes with limitations. It is not powerful enough to excel in high-end video editing workflows, and its fanless design poses problems during extended use. Only having two Thunderbolt 4 ports is also occasionally an issue, although one that can be overcome through a hub, even though that starts to undercut the portability and value factors of the machine. That said, if you are not a power user, the MacBook Air could be more than enough computer for you. Plus, it is as easy on the wallet as on the eyes, which never hurts. If I had a nice desktop at home, and wanted something cheap and simple for occasional work on the road? The MacBook Air is a great choice. But if I wanted a do-it-all machine? The MacBook Pro is the definite pick.

Apple added just a helping of newness to the 2025 MacBook Air to keep things interesting, though I’m not sure there’s enough for recent buyers.

Apple M4 10-Core GPU: A graphics adapter built into the 9-core and 10-core Apple M4 processors that has direct access to fast on-package LPDDR5x-7500 RAM (120 GB/s bandwidth) as well as hardware support for ray tracing and mesh shading and other modern technologies. It appears its real-world performance is almost as good as the GeForce GTX 1650 Laptop. M4-powered iPad Pros will be much slower in long-term GPU-intensive workloads than M4 iMacs, Mac minis and MacBook Pros due to the lack of proper cooling.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

M4 (10 cores): An impressively fast ARM architecture processor (SoC) sporting 4 performance and 6 efficient CPU cores along with a 16-core neural engine and a 10-core GPU with hardware RT support and other modern features. On-package 7500 MT/s LPDDR5x RAM, USB 4 support and Thunderbolt 4 support are onboard as well. The M4 debuted in May 2024 as part of an iPad launch event; it is around 10% to 20% faster than the M3 (10-core GPU) chip. Its power consumption differs vastly depending on the system; in Mac minis, it consumes up to 40 W but in iPads, anything above 14 W is off limits.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
