Apple iPhone 17 is tied with Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra on DxOMark’s camera leaderboard
The Apple iPhone 18 is not expected to hit the market until spring 2027, so the iPhone 17 ($759 on Amazon) should remain available for about another half year as a more affordable alternative to the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. DxOMark has now analyzed the dual camera of the base model in the iPhone 17 series.
With a score of 157 points, the smartphone ranks 20th on the leaderboard, tying with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, and the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Compared to the Apple iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 achieves a score that is 10 points higher. This is due in no small part to the ultra-wide-angle camera, which has been upgraded from a 12 MP to a 48 MP sensor. The 48 MP f/1.6 main camera with a 1/1.56-inch sensor was carried over from the previous model.
The iPhone 17 owes its very high rating in no small part to its excellent video quality in a wide range of lighting conditions, with reliable autofocus and effective image stabilization. The noise reduction works a bit more aggressively than on the iPhone 17 Pro to compensate for the smaller sensor, which results in visibly less detail. However, DxOMark praises the natural colors, fast autofocus, and well controlled image noise.
Compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, the main deduction is in the zoom score, which is no surprise, since the iPhone 17 lacks a telephoto camera entirely and relies instead on digital zoom. There’s also criticism of the Portrait mode, where faces are rendered with less detail, and of the insufficient depth of field in group photos, which can cause people in the background to appear blurry.
