iPhone X and 2018 MacBook Pro are now obsolete, Apple confirms

Apple has updated its list of obsolete products to include the iPhone X and the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro. Both devices have now moved off Apple's vintage list and into the obsolete category, according to Apple's support page for out of warranty service.

Once a product reaches obsolete status, Apple and its Authorized Service Providers stop offering repairs and parts for it altogether, whether the device is still under warranty or not. That goes a step further than vintage status, where Apple and its providers will still try to repair a device as long as parts remain available. Apple generally moves a product to vintage five to seven years after it stops selling it and to obsolete once more than seven years have passed.

The iPhone X launched in November 2017 and was pulled from sale in September 2018. It was Apple's first iPhone with an OLED screen and Face ID, and it dropped Touch ID entirely to make room for an edge to edge display with a notch at the top for the camera and sensors. It also introduced the glass back and stainless steel frame design Apple carried into later iPhone models. The iPhone X never got iOS 17 and topped out on iOS 16.

The 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro arrived a few months earlier, in July 2018. It was the first Apple laptop to include Apple's T2 security chip, though it is also remembered for using the butterfly keyboard, a design Apple later moved away from after years of complaints about reliability. Apple kept a keyboard repair program running for those machines until 2024. The laptop can still run macOS Sequoia, but it will not get any version after that.

If you are still using an iPhone X, this is a good time to think about an upgrade. You could look at Apple's iPhone 17 series, which is available now, or wait a little longer for the upcoming iPhone 18 series.
