Previews suggest that Marvel’s Wolverine performance will exceed expectations. Insomniac Games has clarified that the base PS5 console supports a 60 fps mode and ray tracing by default. On the first-party game’s release date, PSSR upscaling may further improve the graphics.

Marvel’s Wolverine previews praise the first-party PS5 game for smooth visuals. Insomniac Games senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed has shared more details about performance options. Even gamers lacking a PS5 Pro console can experience 60 fps graphics without sacrificing ray-tracing.

Too good to be true?

In an interview, Reiner-Reed told IGN that boosting frame rates was a priority. He explained, “From early on in development, we knew we wanted to make this 60 fps, working on the base PS5 in performance mode.” Gamers can also expect advanced lighting to enhance the diverse environments.

Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology, noted that it was the first time Insomniac was offering these settings in a default mode. In reality, Spider-Man 2 shipped with a 60 fps option that included some ray-tracing benefits. Presumably, on the Marvel’s Wolverine release date, there will be fewer compromises with resolution or lighting effects.

As far back as 2023, there were signs that the project had lofty performance goals. A ransomware attack at the studio revealed a focus on maintaining visual fidelity at high frame rates. Even so, during a 2025 PlayStation State of Play, a gameplay trailer appeared to run at 30 fps.

More recently, at a 2026 State of Play, graphics in a video rendered at double that mark. Still, it wasn’t clear whether the trailer was recorded on the more potent PS5 Pro. While he doesn’t provide specifics on resolution and potential upscaling techniques, Insomniac has alleviated some fears.

Less exploration, more detail

Marvel’s Wolverine previews confirm that the PS5 game has a mostly linear design. Departing from the open-world freedom of Spider-Man titles, developers can focus on maximizing detail levels. In the IGN interview, Fitzgerald stresses how destructible physics show the impact of Logan’s brutal combat.

Before the September 15th Marvel’s Wolverine release date, PlayStation will likely announce the advantages of its flagship console. It’s already listed as a PS5 Pro enhanced game, but with limited additional information. Upgraded PSSR upscaling may further optimize performance at high refresh rates.
