Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine puts everything on the line to save a piece of physical media in one of the most ironic trailer releases following Sony's move to end physical media.
Insomniac Games' latest Marvel's Wolverine story trailer was supposed to get fans talking about Logan's brutal journey, Lady Deathstrike, and the game's September release. Instead, much of the conversation has shifted toward Sony's controversial move away from physical media, with perhaps their last physical disc release becoming the centerpiece of the debate.

The trailer follows Logan across multiple points in his life as he relentlessly fights and struggles to hold on to a photograph. Fans quickly drew comparisons between Wolverine's determination to preserve an irreplaceable physical object and Sony's recently announced plans to phase out physical PlayStation game releases. The irony wasn't lost on viewers, many of whom joked that Logan understands the value of tangible possessions better than PlayStation itself.

Rather than discussing the trailer's story reveals, many of the highest-rated YouTube comments focus almost exclusively on physical game ownership.

Several users remarked that Wolverine's desperate attempt to save a single printed photograph perfectly illustrates why physical media still matters, arguing that digital purchases can never provide the same sense of permanence. Others extended the joke by suggesting that, had the photograph only existed digitally, it would've been little more than a revocable license. The comments have since spread across Reddit and other gaming communities, where the trailer has become a recurring meme in the broader protest against Sony's digital-first strategy.

The backlash also highlights how difficult it has become for PlayStation to separate its games from wider corporate decisions. Despite Marvel's Wolverine itself still receiving a physical release, many players are using every major PlayStation announcement, including the recent San Diego Comic-Con "Deep Cuts" panel, as an opportunity to voice frustration over the company's long-term roadmap. As a result, discussions about Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, and the trailer's cinematic presentation have largely been overshadowed by debates surrounding ownership, preservation, and consumer rights.

Whether the campaign ultimately changes Sony's plans remains uncertain. Analysts generally expect the company to continue pursuing digital distribution because of its financial advantages, but the reaction to Marvel's Wolverine demonstrates that the physical media debate isn't fading anytime soon. If anything, Logan's fight to preserve a single photograph has given players an unexpectedly powerful metaphor for what many believe they're about to lose.
