PlayStation has remained mostly quiet since announcing its shift away from PS5 discs in 2028. However, it’s modifying console packaging to ensure buyers are aware of the change. Warning stickers explain that the PS Store and other retailers are transitioning to selling digital games.

Despite determined protestors, Sony appears unwilling to reverse an unpopular decision. PS5 console boxes now warn shoppers about the demise of physical games. Buyers on social media spotted packaging revisions that confirm digital gaming is taking over.

Behind the Games was one of the first accounts to share an image of the warning sticker. It reads:

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation game releases will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and through retailers exclusively in digital format. Game discs released before January 2028 will continue to be compatible with this console.

The message matches the explanation provided on the company’s July 1st blog post. Starting in early 2028, Sony plans to cease printing new games on PS5 discs. Older selections will still ship on Blu-rays as demand dictates.

Other gamers have also seen the warning sticker, which adorns both the digital and disc versions of PS5 consoles. It’s more evidence that PlayStation is intent on executing its pivot from physical games.

Why aren't the protests working?

Critics have hammered the gaming giant’s social media accounts with complaints about the move. The furor threatens to disrupt promotions for first- and third-party titles. Nevertheless, during a recent investor’s Q&A, Sony CFO Lin Tao broke her silence. She suggested that the potential for greater profits outweighs any temporary customer dissatisfaction.

The company cites statistics showing that buyers overwhelmingly prefer digital games. Organizers of the Don’t Kill the Disc petition point out that these numbers include titles not sold in physical form. They also highlight how PS5 consoles with optical drives remain popular.

Data estimates that around 75% of consumers have opted against the digital variant of the system. PlayStation produced more PS5 disc-based models earlier in the current generation. Regardless, many gamers continue to purchase the version that supports tangible media.

The warning sticker may be an attempt to avoid lawsuits. Still, the disclaimer is unlikely to deter consumer advocates who already believe the PS Store represents a monopoly. A Dutch group was the latest to initiate legal action, arguing that lacking competition, prices will rise. Without physical games at retailers, concerns over its dominance will only grow.
