PSN outage raises concerns about PS5 game access after physical disc era ends

Another widespread PSN outage impacted titles that depend on online connectivity. While some services are returning to normal, physical game advocates are capitalizing on the crisis. They claim that after PS5 disc production dwindles, ownership will become too reliant on Sony’s infrastructure.

Which games are affected?

Downdetector shows that reports of PSN downtime spiked around 7 AM EST/1 PM CEST on July 24th. Gamers who were unable to log in to PlayStation accounts could not access online services or the PS Store. It also blocked players from multiplayer-oriented titles entirely. Even so, in some cases, the outage affected single-player games.

PS5 consoles with Console Sharing and Offline Play active generally avoided issues. The feature allows digital licenses of PlayStation Store purchases to be validated without an internet connection. However, one exception is if a gamer is not using the designated home console.

The latest incident isn’t the first PSN outage to make headlines. In February 2025, the network was offline for 24 hours. Still, that didn’t compare to 2011, when hackers shut it down for more than 3 weeks. The difference is now that physical games are already less common, even before Sony stops printing new PS5 discs in 2028.

Blu-ray-based single-player titles are largely immune from license checks. That said, mandatory day-one updates are common with new releases like Halo: Campaign Evolved. Nevertheless, critics argue that unsound networks prove the fallacy of digital ownership rights.

100% uptime may not be realistic

One way PlayStation could address these concerns is by boosting the reliability and security of its servers. Speculation is that simultaneous problems with Amazon Web Services on July 24th are not coincidental. The gaming giant hasn’t clarified the role of AWS, but the cloud service may empower online multiplayer and PSN authentication.

Unfortunately, even a company as large as Sony needs the support of multiple partners. If only one of these services has issues, it can cripple features and digital purchases. This reality is one of many reasons why protestors want physical discs to remain an option.
