PlayStation account restrictions could become problematic following the death of physical games. Users who relocate to another country frequently must create a new account to make purchases. There is no option to transfer older titles, which is not an issue with PS5 discs.

Consumers are realizing there may be more limitations after Sony ditches new PS5 discs in 2028. The latest issue drawing attention concerns restrictions with PlayStation accounts. If a player switches countries, there is often no way to continue buying digital games on the same account.

Redditor gekeli warned readers about the implications of this policy. When creating a PSN account, Sony requires an accurate address and country of residence. Individuals who later move can’t change their region. While the company suggests registering a new account, existing games and content will become inaccessible.

Solutions to the region-lock aren't ideal

Many gamers choose not to start over in order to retain their purchases and trophy lists. Unfortunately, credit or debit cards registered in the new country often no longer work. This forces workarounds like acquiring gift cards sold in the previous region. Alternatively, PS5 consoles offer Console Sharing and Offline Play, enabling access to digital games on the older account.

With caveats, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Steam don’t impose similar restrictions. Nintendo is particularly lenient, as its supporters can edit regions through a console’s settings. That’s frustrating to PlayStation fans, who are protesting its move away from PS5 discs and physical games.

Another criticism is that, in European countries, the gaming giant’s TOS allows the deletion of unused PlayStation accounts once 3 years pass. Gamers who leave an account idle after moving may later be unable to log in.

Debate over ownership rights

Some skeptics may consider embracing the transition to digital, but only if PSN rules are amended. Otherwise, physical games are more consumer-friendly. They permit owners to travel without worrying about losing access to their libraries.

There are also those who refuse to welcome the digital age, regardless of any policy changes. One implication of relying on the PlayStation Store is that reselling becomes impossible. However, sensing an opportunity, Microsoft could soon debut its rumored disc-to-digital initiative.

Looking ahead to Project Helix, Positron would generate a store license for physical Xbox media. Tied to one account at a time, consumers could still sell or trade the discs in the future. It’s unclear if Sony has its own plans to support the PS6 with a competing program.
